Car Safety

I didn't bother with any of that but a few years ago and when my Mondeos head gasket went a got a cheap as chips Mk2 Fiesta. I was hit head on by a Corsa that had lost control and this was the result . . .

Just glad it wasn't something larger that lost control as it would have been fatal. My new car is 5star and would not ever get anything below 2.

jeez.

I definately look at the NCAP ratings but their not the top decision; but it does figure. Like I wouldnt go for anything less than 3 stars normally, and find most newish cars acheiving at least 4.

So yeah, safety, top priority ;)

To be fair though I've seen absolutely loads of these that have been crashed and none of them have been damaged anywhere near that badly.

I must admit I did look at the NCAP rating ... my attitude doing over 30K miles a year is not if I have an accident but when. My car even has a driver knee airbag.

Must admit it I also looked at the NCAP. I'm going to be doing long motorway driving and also carrying my wife so it's not an area I'd like to skip.

Overall it made my purchase easier as well.

I take quite an interest in car safety and the NCAP rating is one of the most important criteria for me in choosing a car. I drive an 05 Focus which has a 5 star rating. The way I look at it is that driving is probably amongst the most dangerous things most of us do, so it makes sense to drive as safe a car as possible.

You do realise that the star ratings are not comparable across car classes? That means it's only 5 stars when it crashes into another Focus.

Who knows what happens when it crashes into a van, because they dont bother to test that.

I'd put money on my car being safer in an accident than yours - yet mine is 4 star and yours is 5. You only need to look at the things that can bump the car up into the next bracket to see how flawed it is. IIRC BMW added a seatbelt warning bong to the E60 5 Series which took it from 4 to 5 stars!

Yes, I realise it is by classes. When I said "makes sense to drive as safe a car as possible", I suppose I should have said "makes sense to drive as safe a car as you can reasonably afford". Cost would also be a major factor in my car choice as well as safety.

Sure, bigger more expensive cars with lower NCAP ratings might be safer. I expect that weight itself is a bit of a safety factor in collisions going by the laws of conservation of momentum.

i don't take a huge amount of notice but i still have a look.

To be honest almost all mainstream cars built in the last 5 or so years are built to be pretty damn safe and are probably 4 or 5 stars.
