Car using oil still....any ideas? (some legal advice too please)

hay that garage is just down the road from me, just had my M3 MOT'd there... I know the owner there can not fault them very well known in the area.... It's just down the road from the race course isn't it :) Let me know who you delt with there can have a word if you want...

hey fella, it's the owner that i dealt with, Chris with the m3 CSL :)

He was out of the office when i called this morning, will give him a call in 5 minutes though.

Tom.

Weird one this, my old M52 engined 728i used barely any oil between services as does my Dads 230k+ M52 528i

Just as a comparison, I tend to put a litre of Oil into my DAF / Scania Truck every 2000 miles or so.......

500 - 750 miles seems wrong to me.

He confesed to doing over 100 in a 30 zone in an omega and nearly split an mr2 in two, i bet that 330i was fubared before you got anywhere near it ;)

You realise i was 17 when i had that omega, and 18 when i had the MR2 Turbo. I havnt really thrashed cars other than company cars for years. The last time my Mercedes saw 3000+rpm was, christ i couldnt even tell you, maybe at the RR day when we had a little blat down the M5 to the pub, the fact i average nearly 25mpg from a 2 tonne V8 automatic running 275 section tyres shows how i drive these days :)

Woflchild - whats that car on mileage wise now? It was no spring chicken when you bought it, and i get the impression you are piling it on!

Just bought a 2nd house down near my daughter so get to work 3 days a week from home now so my mileage has slowed down a lot. Just ticked over 167k today actually. Needs new front wishbones, well one but down in pairs, and thats it. Running like a dream and still no ideas what to replace with yet as does me proud and love driving it still.

In all honesty i really want to get 250k out of it or more :D so even if i do replace it i will keep it until it expires in a fireball of petrol and oil!

Glad its all going well, always interesting to hear about cars ive sold. Not surprised it hasn't needed much work, prior to myself all it was used for since brand new was a very long daily commute, on the same stretch of road, back and forth :)

Try some Edge 0W-30 or Edge Sport 0W-40. This have much lower volatility than other oils and might help.

Other than that it could simply be worn rings or the way you drive. A blocked breather certainly will not have helped things. Make sure that it is clear and connected to the airbox correctly. This will allow the positive crankcase ventilation to work correctly, helping the rings to seal better and also allowing the oil scraper ring to do a better job.

Do you spend much time on over run at high revs? The cylinders will be under vacuum as the throttle is shut. This would assist oil getting from the cylinder liners into the combustion chamber.

Does LL04 supercede LL01? Im not too familiar with BMW specs

I had a similar problem with my Alfa (Oil running out in about 500 miles without any sign of it out the back or on the floor). Turned out the oil filter was leaking when hot, but the oil was dripping on to the exhaust and burning off which I couldn't see or smell from inside the cabin. I don't know what its like on your beemer but is there a chance that the oil is burning off without leaving any obvious residue?
