Carrera Bikes

Just casual riding. Few weekends and things. It will be off road as much as possible (New Forest and things), riding on the road will just be to get places.

Thread revival.

I've moved house and job. New job has a Cycle to Work scheme, and the new house is in the Surrey Hills, so I really have no excuse not to get a mountain bike now!

So I'm looking for a sub £500 bike (before Cycle scheme discounts) for casual fat man off road riding. Hard tail ideally. But Halfords aren't in the Cycle to Work sheme (http://cyclesheme.co.uk) so no Carreras. Evans Cycles are in it though.

Any suggestions? £500 is my absolute max, I'd like to get a helmet and some other gear too for that budget. I've heard from a guy at work that 2013/14 models are imminent so there might be some bargains on last years models to be had?

Tbh you would be better looking at second hand bikes like 'giant anthem' specialized stumpjumper' 'trek remedy' 'commencal meta'. If you do end up enjoying riding then they're bikes that will grow with you and won't need upgrading, if you don't like it you will lose little or no money when selling it on.

The kind of second hand spec you want would be rockshox air forks front, fox or rockshox air suspension on rear and sram x9 or Shimano xt gears

I will be buying through a Cycle to Work scheme, so new.

I'm coming up soon to my 12 months on the Cycle to Work Scheme and I'm now not convinced it's the best thing sliced bread.
I had a £750 bike + £250 worth of accessories and none of it will be mine until after 4 years and I think I could have had a loan and got a better deal.

Anyway, in January I had a bad accident so decided I wanted a 'Winter Bike' that I could feel more confident on and bought a Carrera Subway for £279 from Halfords.
First day out I was gobsmacked that it was only a bit slower than my road bike over my 5 miles commute and is an excellent ride but I'm going to change the seat before Winter comes.
I love my Forme Longcliffe road bike but now wonder if I wasted money when the Carrera Subway is so good.

It's yours for all intents and purposes. You think your employer wants your second hand bike back? Of course they don't. What the hell use would it be to them.

I got lucky, a alcoholic needed money and he sold me a mint carrera subway 2 for 70 pounds. I think its a great bike, its light and 27 speed, plus hybred design so its got a nice medium inbetween fat and thin tyres. Hills are so easy compared to a mountain bike with fat types, but they are more stable that an outrught rice bike. A word of warning though, the parts are expensive to fix with nice bikes, be prepared to pay 75 pounds for a buckled wheel on a carerra on sale for 270 ish and more for better models.

I'm after a hard tail mountain bike, not a road bike. It will be used for recreational off-road riding.

I won't be riding it to work, nobody who has a bike on the cycle to work scheme at work does.

Apparently the Trek sale started today, I'll see what I can find.
