cat caught a bird - advice needed

one of our cats caught a bird earlier on (most likely casper as oscar can't catch a thing).

We managed to get it off them before they hurt it anymore, and put the bird in a small card box with some tissue to keep him warm and some bits of bread.

We thought it had a broken neck at first as his head kept dropping to the side but after putting him in the box he seemed to brighten up abit and is moving his head and looking about and also moved his windws and legs etc - so it looks like he hasnt broken any bones.

I think he is just more in shock - put the box on the window as a bit of warmth from the sun might help.

It seems like he is sleeping - i keep checking on him every so often open the lid and he seems good (looks about etc then closes his eyes) - hes been like that for a few hours.

How long should we keep him like that - we dont really want to keep him inside too long as it prob wont be very good for him.

Looking at him he is not bleeding - just has a few of his feather missing on the back of his neck.

2nd time one of the cats have caught a bird (tbh the birds torment the cats as they never sit in the tree they got him from unless the cats are out).

So anyone got some advice to help the little birdie.

(BTW those posting to say kill it, burn it with fire, kill that cats etc dont even bother)

Advice wanted from people who care!

Put the box outside somewhere where the cats can't get to it and leave the lid off - The bird will fly off when it's good and ready. Problem solved :)

What about phoning the RSPB for advice?

checked with their website which was usless - check the RSPCA which just said to put the bird in a dark box to help it from shock etc.

If i had a car/could drive id take it to an rspca/rspb or vet but i dont drive.

we had an exact situation like this a few years back. we called up the rspcb and they came and picked up the bird it was free and the bird i would like to think lived happily ever after.

To avoid it happening again could to put bells on their collars to scare the birds away. Doesn't work with fledglings that can't fly too well!

doesn't work with cats that can wriggle out of collars either ;)

good news.

He started to liven up so we put him outside and he started to bird jump around the yard then flew of into some bush type things.

So he is all fully working - just in a bit of shock, atleast outside he can rest in surroundings he is used to.

Maybe he will tell the rest of his clan to stop tormenting the cats - and he had a lucky escape.

Im struggling to think why it moved its windows, and how it had windows

Our cats always chasing the birds, think he takes after me :D , trouble is i can't catch em either. :(
