CBR600 F3 (96) Clutch question

probably the friction plates expanding then when hot, what type of oil can you use? usually 10/40 oil, some bikes take 10/30 oil aswell, maybe a thinner oil might help but only if they recommend it

Forums show people using 10w/40 for road and 10w/30 for track. most say to avoid fully synthetic. I don't know whats in there but I've topped it up with semi

Could this be mis-adjusted clutch springs?

Idk tbh,I've never messed on clutches yet, some earlier bikes have seals that fully synthetic oil affects

Whatever it is it's expanding when hot and binding

you cant mis-adjust the springs.
Most bikes there is no adjustment on the springs. you just do them up all the way

Well On testing this morning it appears that the clutch drag is only present when the bike is warm.

Unlikely to be an oil problem then.

It could just possibly be caused by uneven spring pressure i.e. one spring of the set (I think the old 600F uses four springs) has gone weak or is broken This would mean the clutch pressure plate wouldn't get released evenly. It could also be a warped steel plate that gets worse at high temperatures.

Time to get the clutch cover off and take a closer look, it's not a difficult job.

Note that the clutch cover gasket may well come off in bits, so if you need the back back together and working quickly it would be worth ordering a new gasket (pattern ones are generally fine).

So to be sure swap the whole lot out by the sounds of it

That won't be the cheapest option, springs, friction plates and steels will be ~£70 for pattern parts. A new clutch basket will be ridiculously expensive, so a good s/h one is probably the best option if this the problem.

I'd get the cover off and inspect everything to start with, maybe take a few pics and put them on here. If you get a gasket then you can put it all back and keep it on the road whilst you order any replacement parts that may be needed.

I have a gasket on it's way. Think I'll get some springs while I'm at it.

Fireskull - Are you happy to have a look at this with me?

edit: springs ordered

Sure thing, when are you thinking? not really free this weekend, maybe a few hours on Sunday but could do an evening after work?

Just remember you'll need to either lean the bike over to prevent all the oil falling out when you remove the cover, or drain the the oil first.

I always do it on the sidestand, no oil comes out then.

Next week is fine by me, any day from 6pm onwards apart from Wednesday.
Just downloaded a service manual for your bike, unless you have one already.

I have one yeah. Tuesday next week do you? And where do you want to have a look at it? Mine, or do you want me to bring it over?

Clutch springs changed but it has not fixed the issue. The clutch is still dragging but the bike feels better for getting them swapped

Wazza:
Interestingly it has fixed something else! The bike wasn't happy pulling away at low revs (2K) and used to take a bit to pickup and pull. This is no longer the case now the strings have been changed.

Replaced with Lucas springs (10% harder than standard)
