Champions Online going free to play

Not unless you were lucky enough to get beta access. Like yours truly. Been playing it for a few weeks now. And I've been hearing people who played CoH and CO saying that DCUO blows both games out of the water. And it's still in beta. That says something.

Seriously? Since the NDA has been lifted all I have heard from friends is that it is completely mediocre, uninspired, uncreative, and uninteresting.

To be fair, most of the stuff i've read since they lifted the NDA has been mixed. People are either saying it's terrible or they're saying it's a great game but needs a little work, there are very few on the middle ground.

Played this when it first released, reached max level on my char and had pretty much the the most overpowered build.

Will probably check it out when it goes free. :p

Well the ones I have been playing with have said it's better than CoH and CO. I tried CoH for 30min...it was enough to tell me that it was a waste of time. And that was with the 14 day trial version.

It does need serious work but for a beta, it's really good.

Like most MMOs I guess.

Very true, but i wanted to point out that the general word since it was lifted isn't all negative. Probably down to the fact that i want it to be good, no doubt i'll be a sucker and buy it even if it's not just like i did with CO and STO, both of which i knew were half baked from beta but still bought anyway in the small hope they'd be turned around quickly after launch. At least this time i'll get more enjoyment out of my 30 days if nothing more as i haven't beta'd this one.

Something i haven't seen mentioned is the community aspect, it was what kept me playing City of Heroes from launch for three years then on and off since then, what's not to like about the more people you play with the better the game is. CO never captured that at all.

Well I can safely, that there are those of us in the beta of DCUO who enjoy raiding almost every night of the week and weekend. We've all said how we will make an awesome guild together when the game goes live. We've got guys who raid daily and those of us who are casual raiders but we still have immense fun when raiding. The only downside to the beta is that we cannot form guilds or add friends. So hence why we all cannot wait to guild up after it launches.

So yeah, the more people you play with, the better it does indeed get. :D

Will be great to see more people in the game - just wish they had added a little more content before this. I know there are new areas, but it is nowhere near the scale of content added to Star Trek Online.

I've just reinstalled STO, patched up CO again before i went to work. F2P seems to be a good method for MMO's, it draws in a lot of players who will most likely enjoy the game enough to dip into the store to keep their fun going.

It's to do with the store and unlocking more content. If you enjoy the game, you're bound to pay to unlock more content and goodies, LotRO has been very successful since F2P launched. I think every MMO with a store should adopt this approach, especially SWG.

After looking at the list of restrictions on Free to Play accounts i doubt very much that Champions will trippling it's revenue.

This has to be the most restrictive free 2 play that i've seen. I was humming and hawing over whether i could put up with the restrictions seeing as i already have a lot of good characters on there from when i played... until i found out that i would have to delete all my characters, a fair few of them max level, apart from one to be able to create a new one. To top that off i would have to 'convert' the remaining level 40 to a single archetype! The main draw of the game when it came out for me was A that it is a hero game and B that you weren't defined to one role.

I can see this being a complete and utter fail as who in their right mind would want to trash all their characters and ruin the last remaining one to play a game that wasn't even good when it was pay to play?
