Change from SLI 1.5gb 580's to Single 2gb 680?

Clock the nuts off the windforce and you'll get solid above 60 FPS.

I turned off ambient occlusion and FXAA but run everything else max and i average at 100-120fps vsync on (120hz goodness). I dont see it drop below 90.

Edit// you wont even need to OC to stay at 60fps tbh.

Just to add here.....I moved from 2 x gtx 580 sli to a single gtx 680. Didn't notice much difference in .bf3 to be honest. Although I am adding a second card anyway for other reasons.

Gtx 680 phantom 4.gb and runs much quieter in comparison to the dcu ii 580's.

Who you calling old Gregster? - Off to diversity training for you my son. lol

So where would I find it IF I do have access to it then?

lol. It needed to be setup in trust. It has changed since but a good way to sell to forum friends :)

Ok so last night I was playing on the new BF3 DLC Armored Kill maps and my framerate was dipping down to the 40's.. I hope with these new larger maps I'm not hitting the VRAM limit? - Otherwise I should make the jump even sooner?

I will need to google to see if anyone else is having problems.

An easy way to find out whats going on?

In Afterburner, change the settings so the OSD shows the vram usage next to the gpu temp on screen (in the pink writing). You'll be able to see then how much you're using in game and stuff. I had pretty much the same rig as you, part for part, and I upgraded to 3GB 580's because I was always hitting 1.5GB limit in skyrim.

For all you know, you might not be, but its best to find out the numbers first eh.

I don't think it's because of Vram, but more because a larger map = more players and more physics have to be calculated etc, and that puts a hughe amount of load onto the CPU.

Going from GTX 580 1.5GB to GTX 670 2GB will give you an increase between 22~33% depending on settings and game. That's my experience so far

Maybe it was a server load issue, I assume my [email protected] should be able to cope on the client side? I shall investigate further this evening by adding the Vram usage to Afterburner and also trying a few different servers.

Yeah but I'm going from 2 GTX 580's to 1 GTX 670.. So I guess I will expect a drop 30-40% drop! - Question is will BF3 still be playable, especially with these new maps.

OK so I was playing today on a 50 player server, I was getting decent FPS (80+) But my VRAM was @1495 so at the very upper limit.

Does that mean it is running out? Or just right.

BF3 will be playable definitely, less heat noise and power consumption also. Your vram there is coming very close to the limit there too.

Well due to an opportunity I could not resist I've actually now updated to a
HIS 7970 X Ghz edt card!

Never thought I would switch back to ATI but so far I have been impressed!

Good framerates with BF3 and it never goes above 65C... My last two 580's would both be in the 80's! and I cannot even hear the card now.

Oh and now I have 3gb of VRAM i've not seen it go above 1525mb (Everything maxxed out) - So maybe there was not really a problem (or would that extra 25mb it wanted have been an issue?)

Every card handles VRAM differently, in terms of garbage collection and how they manipulate it.

Newer technology handles memory way better, look at vram consumption compared to say 460s then the 670/80s etc. Theres a clear difference in the same games.

If you didn't have enough VRAM (even if it needed 2MB more) the game has to stream data from the pagefile and you will get a noticeable drop in framerates and a shudder as it does this. It will drop to single digit FPS or even freeze completely depending.
