I want to upgrade to 2GB of ram , how ever all the 2GB dual channels kits seem really expensive or really high latency.Currently I have 2x512 geil value pc3200 which is CAS 2.5 6-3-3 so don't really want to go higher than that.

For example the geil value stuff 2GB dual channel kit are CAS 3.0 8-4-4 for £119 , yet I can buy 4x512 for £124 at CAS 2.5 6-3-3 , whats up with that?.

Cheapest ones I can see that are lowish latency are the G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 (2x1GB) CAS2 Dual Channel Kit for £152 and are 2-3-2-5.

I might be able to strech to them , are they worth it or would it be better to go 4x512 to save some money?.

Not looking for any fantastic overclocking ablity on em , just some nice decent speed ram.

AMD A64 + 4x512MB = POOR PERFORMANCE, ask anyone here or do a Google. Unless, off course, your system's not a AMD. Don't know the take on Intel

Your thread got me thinking. Have some 1GB Value RAM Kit (2x512MB) that was/is rated @ CAS3. Running them, now @ 2.5-3-3-8 2.7v. Did not have to up the Volts, but did so just to give it a-bit more juice. Ok, my question is, can you get away with the same on these CAS3 2GB kits, value or non-value?

1Gb sticks are more expensive as they use higher density memorychips that are more difficult to make.

4x512Mb is possible but not advisable, you lose the option of running at 1T and overclocking is also very difficult.

Maybe Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200PT TwinX for 135 quid, that runs at 3-3-3-8 default and might be able to run at 2.5-3-3-8

So, if 'lucky' can run any CAS3 2GB kit @ 2.5-3-3-8 or does it depend on brand, volts, mobo, etc?

Suprised by my OcUK 1GB Value kit. Thought i'd need more volts to run it at 2.5-3-3-8 but no. Even run memtest once in awhile to see if any errors, nothing. Though i run it at stock speeds

Geil Value 2 x 512mb was always 3-4-4 defaults... but ive NEVER seen anyone not manage 2.5-3-3 or better ... generally up to 230mhz or so too...

I had Corsair Value 1 x 1gb previously, and it did 2.5-3-3 despite being rated 3-4-4 ... id say any reasonable branded ram should do 2.5-3-3 ... though its NOT guaranteed

Got my Geil 2GB (2x1GB) kit a week and a half ago from OcUK for £89.95+VAT when it was on TWO. Default timings are 3,4,4,8 but I'm running it at 2.5,3,3,7 on stock volts (2.65v according to my motherboard), at 200MHz. Haven't tried for more but there's no reason to think it won't give it. :) Dead chuffed. For £105 all in you can't go wrong. Oh, and with the blue heat spreaders it looks great too. Shame it's a little more now but still a bargain.

Simon.

K thanks for the help :). Think I might be able to get funds to get the G.skill stuff , if not I'll take a risk on the geil and hope it will do 2.5.

That's with Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS)

No idea what that's what you're looking for. :p

The "kits" are mroe stable than 2x single sticks in the value range.

I have corsair value select 512MB sticks (single retail sticks) which I paired on my abit KW7 mobo and in dual channel mode sometimes games will crash with a memory error and bsod but running the memory in single channel mode works flawlessly - I guess this is why dual channel kits exist because they are designed to work in dual channel.

also I see corsairs VS DC kits are cas3 only - mine are cas2.5 each, maybe that's why..

Upgradinmg to 2x 1GB OCZ Gold/Platinum soon though, need it :)
