last year I just went with a second hand one on ebay for £100 just check what BTU you need.
I just stick it out of window, no seal or anything and works fine.
how heat is measured, so depending what size room you have, depends what size air con you need.
100 up to 150 sq ft 5,000BTU
150 up to 250 sq ft 6,000BTU
250 up to 300 sq ft 7,000BTU
300 up to 350 sq ft 8,000BTU
350 up to 400 sq ft 9,000BTU
400 up to 450 sq ft 10,000BTU
450 up to 550 sq ft 12,000BTU
550 up to 700 sq ft 14,000BTU
700 up to 1,000 sq ft 18,000BTU
I have the previous amcor model from appliances direct, it cost the same and I have been using it for 3 years now, just about to pull it out now as my room is like a sauna! It is an absolute life saver in this heat.
be careful when buying an aircon unit too cheap. A few summers ago it was so hot i just went and got the cheapest one i could find and it was so loud and ineffective i took it back the next day and then started doing my research...
the further down the research rabbit hole i went the more the idea of a cheap aircon unit disappeared. then again, i suppose it depends on your idea of cheap...for £250 you should be able to get something good.
My advice is to try and find out how loud the unit you are planning on buying can be because this was something i didn't take into consideration at first but it is a real issue once you install the thing.
We bought one last year from Homebase, and its been great. Well its the other half that uses it, every day near enough (dont ask, we've moved into a modern house thats too warm apparently!!)
@BriT the air movement nose is a bit louder than a free standing fan. From some research and previous threads on here it seems if you want quiet you have to go for a split unit (ie one that has most of the noisy gubbins in a unit outside and a small quiet unit inside the room, linked by pipes)
