Does anyone know any cheap places to stay for about 6 of us in Cantebury?

Ideally near to the univeristy campus or center of the town.

We won't be driving so that pretty much rules out the travelinn/travel lodge sites.

Ideas?

Regards

Chris.

There is a hotel round the corner from my gaff that i think is about £40 a night. Its the Victoria Hotel.

Edit: Hmm, it not really in an ideal place though.

But they do have a very good carvery.

I'll let you stay in my house for £50 a night pp if you want. ;)

Sorry I'm not much help - but when is it? I'm guessing during term time so it's probably not a possibility, but the uni let people rent rooms in parkwood

They keep some good pints in there. Not sure about the rooms though, but it is a good location thats for sure!

I think I was in there a couple of weeks ago as part of a pub crawl, is there a bit around the back that's a bit like a conservatory (near the jukebox)?

Yeah, i think thats the one. I havent been in there for about 2 years lol

Millers Arms is a really nice pub, nicely done out inside with a small courtyard garden at the back. The food is really nice if not a bit on the pricey side.

Can't comment on the rooms as have never stayed there.

It's a 20 minute walk uphill to the Uni but if you're going out there then it's downhill on the way back and you won't notice by then! :D

Other options are there lots of B&Bs at the bottom of the Uni hill on London Road.

aubuys is quite good, as is the penny thearter bar both have dj's on fri / sat evenigs, avoid chicargo rock as youll get into a punch up and the night club on the ring road is to be avoided, unless you like chav's

Rofl! Alberrys and The Works! lol, if your a student you have the venue but that went down hill as soon as they changed it all back in 2002 or was it 2001?

I need a place to crash in Lancaster but I can't find anything cheap! Anyone knows a hostel around there? Google isn't much of a use either :(

Must have been 2002, as I saw no changes there.

The Works, if that's the one opposite station, was full of good looking underage wenches in rather revealing frocks.

The Venue used to be really good and then they changed it to be student entry only (I used to go along with my wife who was a student). Was a lot of trouble caused by non students.

Alberry's isn't too bad a bit small and dingy, best of a bad bunch down in town I think. Amazes me that a lively student city like Canterbury has no good clubs at all.

Chicago or whatever they call it is the standard short skirt meat market, and The Works is best avoided unless you like a trip to casualty on Fri or Sat night.

Studio 47 (just next to Chicago's) do themed nights uncluding the very popular gay night Girls And boYs which is supposed to have a great atmopshere.

I think it was 2002, im pretty sure it was the year i graduated (damn my 4 year course)!

I would say Alberrys is probably my fav out of all of them, although it is becoming a bit of a nightmare to get in after 10:30. Mind you a lot of the bars round town are starting to get late licences so this is making up for the lack of clubs.

They've changed it around a lot. I think it was probably 03 (could've been earlier) they built a wall between the bottom floor and the balcony. Then they knocked it down again in 05. From the looks of things it used to have a lot more character but it has been improving recently in terms of acts and music. In-fact there's a silent disco coming up on feb 22nd (music is played on wireless headphones) which sounds amusing.

The Venue used to be really good and then they changed it to be student entry only (I used to go along with my wife who was a student). Was a lot of trouble caused by non students.

You can still get in as a non-student before 10pm (iirc) if you're one of the first fifty guests and everyone in the group has a student to sign them in (doesn't matter what university as long as they have a student card and proof of age I think).
I think they would let more non-students in if they could, but the council won't give them them license I believe.

As for the works, it has a good atmosphere on a student night (mon / wed), but it's not really the place to go on any other night. Obviously you have to be a student to get in, again.

*****s! I now have to spend £50 for a night at a B&B because the damn rail doesn't get to Lancaster untill twenty to 9!
