Hi - I have just ordered a 4830 ati graphics card and have heard that my pentium d might bottleneck reducing the speed

I dont have a massive amount of resources yet so is there a cheap processor out there which would replace the pentium d 3ghz and make my pc run quicker

I have a
CPU Type DualCore Intel Pentium D 925, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Motherboard Name ASRock ConRoe1333-D667
and 2 gigs of ram
450 watt psu

I was reading the specs on that motherboard on the Asrock website. Its another example of their techniques of using cheaper chipsets. It does mention that to use 1333FSB processors it has to be overclocked, and the PCIe will be running at 115mhz instead of 100

Personally I'd look at the E7300, its 45nm but has a 1066FSB. Its 2.66Ghz and it will blow your P4D925 away. I went from a 3.2Ghz P4D to a 2.66Ghz E6700 when they were first released and I've yet to need to upgrade the CPU further. Core 2's are so efficient that a 1.6Ghz part can outperform a 3.2Ghz P4D.

Yeah, look for an E7200/E7300 and attempt to OC it if you can, even just a little.

Or look for an E6600/E6750/E6850

I'd suggest an E2200. It's based on 65nm so it would be more likely to work on your motherboard without issues than the 45nm based processors, unless you can get a cheap E6xxx. It also overclocks well and even at stock would be much faster than your Pentium D due to the efficiency of the Core 2 architecture.

You could sell your pentium d for a decent price on a certian auction site.

Anyway, I agree with Matt on the 45nm issues. Better safe than sorry so get a 65nm processor, possibly a second hand e6xxx series and overclock it.

Reason I suggested the 7300 is because its the fastest 45nm 1066FSB part, Asrocks website specifically states that Wolfdale processors are supported (even the 1333FSB parts), but with a side note that 1333FSB processors require the chipset to be overclocked, which drives the PCIe to 115mhz. The 1066FSB parts run without the need to overclock the 945 chipset. Wolfdales are slightly faster clock for clock than Conroes.

Picking up an older E6xxx would probably be a bad idea on this motherboard as Asrock boards are rarely stable overclockers.

there are good asrock fan sites/forums. I would suggest flashng the bios first then getting a cpu on the asrock compatibility list or confirmed to work by another user.

overclosking a 1066fsb cpu should be possible to 10 maybe 15% on that board which is a handy boost but not essential
