Can anyone help with a cheap way of backing upto 8TB of storage from a home server? Budget is really low <£100 but i would ideally like to have some sort of backup in place.
In your home, with your hardware it would be hard to replicate 8TB. You could try what the previous poster suggests and find very cheap online storage.
Wow I signed up last week and got free 512GB backup! They have stopped it now. The luck has come back to me.
By the way, if you are backing up online I would check about encryption either server side or on your local machine before uploading, that is if you have personal info up on the cloud.
I have 11TB RAID6 array and I simply can't afford to back it all up.
Granted most of it is my DVD/Bluray collection ripped so I can replace it if I lost it (just dont want to spend all the 100's of hours spent doing it!) but the stuff I can't replace I robocopy once a week onto 1 of 2 2TB eSATA disks. I keep one in the house, and the other at work and rotate them each week.
It sounds like you don't have any backup at all, so I'd prioritise and get enough external storage to put your most important/irreplaceable files on. Imagine yourself returning to a smoking server and asking yourself "how much would a backup be worth now?" It might be more than £100
Alternatively, find someone willing to store your collection of linux distros on their server?
This thread and a couple of recent posts made me think about checking out tape cartridge prices.
Looks like about £80-£85 for 5x800gb. Not too bad I think, if you only need to archive and you rekon you will never likely need to access data there unless a HD fails. Just backup new stuff overnight occasionally. But then I saw the tape drive player prices themselves
Sweet baby Jesus.
Ok, so checkout blue ray media prices. Ouch. And 4tb would mean ejecting and inserting 160 disks. Ouch. I can still see my old CD and DVD 50x spindle backups from nearly 10 years ago on my shelf. Wouldnt fancy that again.
Its (just) still possible to find 2TB drives for £60, as mentioned above. They were <£55 last week. OcUK are betting they will be £80+ by next week.
