Got enough old hardware lying around to put together another machine, all I need is a cheap case & processor, cheap being the operative word.

I was thinking maybe the Intel Celeron 430 1.80GHz 800FSB, a mighty beast!

Not selling it on or anything, just going to get the best overclock I can out of it for something to do, then will probably give it to a friend or donate it somewhere.

Anyone know how this cpu will overclock, or have any other suggestions?

Found a few of those Meatloaf, cheapest I could see was £40 exc p&p. If I could get a Duo for £20-£25 I would go for it, however I want to get both case & cpu for under £50.

What about a PENTIUM 4 820 D, 2.8GHZ DUAL CORE, SL8CP? £23 inc del.

I have another machine with an E6300 running at stock which is only used for web browsing & storing music for an mp3 player, I could swap them & use the E6300 in the new build.

Only thing I'm unsure about is the lithography, my Gigabyte DS3 is for 65nm cpu's & the Pentium D is 90nm. That shouldn't matter though should it? They're both LGA775.

Thats an option, the E6300 would be better than the Pentium D. Its multi isnt as high so youd need a higher FSB on the mobo

Just post in GD a lot... obviously don't spam, but post a few pointless/funny(ish) comments in some threads in there - nobody cares if you're being a numpty in GD - most people post **** in there at some point LOL

You'll be browsing the members market before you know it (and you'll be able to get free postage from OcUK! :) always good!!

Good idea Enigma1981 :D

I've bought an Intel Pentium E2140 Dual Core for £21 including p&p

1.6 Ghz, 1mb L2 cache, 800mhz fsb. Should be fun seeing what I can get out of it :p

Good call, the Pentium D sucks. Even at 4ghz, they're only around the performance of a 2ghz Core2Duo iirc. An E2140 will do 3ghz+ I think :)

Got an E6600 for 35 quid on da bay, had a spare mobo that was crap with quads (DS3 965P v1) so picked this up cheap. L626B, 3.6Ghz on 1.25v and 3.8Ghz @ 1.325v :D, RAM runs out of puff, or else i'd definetly be at 4Ghz at around 1.4v-1.45v ish :D

The Intel Pentium E2140 Dual Core 800FSB has been dispatched & I'm awaiting delivery, can't wait to get an overclock going on this little thing!!

if your using a gigabyte DS3 965P v1 i don't think they went much higher than 310 fsb so the low multiplier of the e2140 is going to limit your overclock to around 2.5 ghz i'm afraid :(

Drat, I remember struggling to get 333mhz when I used to run it, but that was after flashing the BIOS to get quad support. I heard they weren't good with quads but was hoping to get better results with less cores :(

Update:
I swapped the Pentium E2140 for an E6300 which I put in my sisters machine in 2007 when I upgraded, she just uses office apps & the internet so wont notice the difference ;)

As a quick comparison I noted the boot to windows time & 1M super Pi for both chips:

E6300 - Boot to Windows = 51 secs, 1M Super Pi = 33.39 secs
E2140 - Boot to Windows = 59 secs, 1M Super Pi = 41.09 secs

Also bought a £20 case, 120mm "turbine" fan on the front of it, cheap as chips but looks impressive :D
