I am looking for the cheapest card possible to run Vista properly as a workstation. I don't intend to play games, just do word processing and internet I am speccing another machine to do video/audio work.

I want to see Vista in all its glory (Aero etc) though but I don't want to spend the earth. I have a Samsung Syncmaster SM-226BW so the gfx card has to support that.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Sorry forgot to mention I have an Asus A8n-SLI Deluxe motherboard.

Any directx9 pci-e graphics card?

(geforce 5 series or newer or ati 9500 or newer)

However a stock geforce 6600 will manage fine with aero without slowdown (I have no experience with slower cards, and how well they perform in aero).

^ this is ideal for Vista.

What card do you currently have?

I don't have anything just yet I am building a new system. I just wondered if they do a fanless version of that card and would it be quieter?

Good luck with trying to get aero to work on Vista, I have tried with a ATI 9800Pro and a ATI X1650 and could not get either of them to work with aero, despite about 6 attempts with formatting and clean installs every time.

With which version of Vista?

Also, you got all the drivers including mobo ones working properly?

I tried Vista Ultimate and Vista Home Premium, could not get aero to work, I was using the latest Catalyst drivers (7.6) but Vista kept saying that this version of Catalyst is not compatible with Vista. Other than than, Vista worked fine. Because of the drivers not working correctly (I guess) the Vista perfomance indes only gave it a score of 1, dissabling aero automatically

I could not find any Vista drivers for my motherboard (MSI)

Mine was the same, ASRock 939Dual-SATA2. Had to download AGP drivers/patch for 939Dual-VSTA. After, installed ATi drivers & now works fine.

You might not find the solution on the mobo's support site because, like ASRock told me 'mobo not designed for Vista'

Thanks mate,

Incidently, where would I find the vista motherboard drivers, if not on MSI's site?

Thanks

Forums would be a good place to start. Might have to sift through loads of threads to find the solution/s. Also Google ;)

I just did the same thing as you, I bought the 1050 and the fan is silent during desktop work. Just kicks in if you try and do any 3D stuff. OcUK don't stock it but GeCube do a fanless one.
