Hi,

I recently posted in the memory section (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17996025)

Basically i have a memory hungry program and I need 8GB of RAM to do what i need to do. In the memory section someone kindly pointed out that my asus a8n sli premium mobo would only take 4GB of ram. I need to upgrade my cpu anyway from an athlon64 4000+ san diego 939.

I wasnt going to upgrade my computer because I dont really have the money but i might be able to get work to pay for it. So I basically need some help on a spec. I need a new mobo, CPU and 8GB of RAM. The cheaper the better... but I am keen on a decent price/performance ratio.

The RAM doesnt need to be fast, its only capacity that is the issue.

Anything new must be miles better than my current 4000+ san diego 939 and 2GB of ram.

any help? :)

thanks

I thought this would be good for a cheap mobo:

but i dont think it will handle 8gb ram. - yep, just checked. might need to go for a better chipset mobo?

e5200 cpu @ 60 notes

memory @ 64

plenty of p43 chipset mobos for 75quid+ that will handle 8gb ram, but i'm not clued up enough about the earlier mobos.

amd route:

mobo - 46quid

cpu - 52

mem - as above

I think you'll be able to get a lot better performance from the intel route by a later cpu upgrade than what the am2 take, but thats just some 'knowledge from osmosis'.

With free delivery, which you are eligable for, this comes to around £270, but offers good bang for buck.

Thanks so much for the responses guys.

Im really sorry for wasting your time... I have found a computer in my department at university with 8GB of memory running CentOS which I just installed imageJ on and it works.

Is there a way to close this thread so no one else wastes their time? hrmm well I guess if they read this they will know but someone might miss it.

Sorry again, I have been stressing, I have 5 more months left to write my phd thesis, and this was a big stumbling block... All is sorted now :)
