Cheapest laptop for surfin + eve

Toshiba seem to make a solid laptop these days, so they'd be worth a look. How much is your budget?

What about the Dell 1300's? About £350ish

What is Dell's build quality like normally? I use a Dell laptop at work quite often and I've had to resort to an external keyboard because the Enter key keeps popping off, it isn't like I'm heavy-handed while typing either. Maybe it is an isolated incident but it doesn't exactly make me want to rush out and buy one :)

I've had a Dell Inspiron 630m for a few months now. It's been getting some reasonably heavy usage, seeing as I'm currently without my PC, and it's been great. Build quality isn't 100% if I'm being honest (i.e. to the standard of notebooks twice its price), but there's nothing loose, wobbly or otherwise disappointing about it.

Very happy with mine. Would suggest getting the Windows disc with it though if you do buy a Dell (only costs another £5 a think), because otherwise you'll have to keep the 3GB restore partition it comes with on the HDD. Also allows you to do a full, clean install if Windows without all the extra crap that Dell see fit to install on it.

I always used Dell laptops and I cant fault them. Very sturdy IMO
except for when they blow up at conferences... if i were buying a branded laptop, it would either be toshiba or HP/compaq(prefer the HP chassis though), ive seen some cheap qosmio F20's flying about(been replaced by the new F30 series), they do it all and come with a not to shabby 256mb 6600 graphics card;) probably pick one up for about £650

Just like to add that the HP and compaq laptops have the exact same type of chassis, which are actually not very good.

Toshiba wins in all areas when compared to the HP or the compaq.
P.s. the Qosmio range are MAHUSIVE :p
Satellite and Tecra are a nice range of laptops to have a look at.
