I'm booked to go to london on the 2nd of May for a couple of nights and i'm exploring different ways to get there. The best way seems to be to fly and that'll be around £100 as far as I can make out, but I've had people at work saying the train can be mega cheap? Its a 4 hour journey which isnt too bad at all, but all the places I've checked seem to be ridiculously priced (around £150-200 return).

The Megabus is £7 return. Yes, SEVEN pounds! But I really don't fancy sitting on a Bus for 9 and a half hours.

Does anyone have any tips for cheaper trains or somewhere i've not checked?

If you get to the train booking pages as the fares are announced you can get tickets at silly money. Last year I paid £14 each way by train. I think the fares are announced around three months in advance.

Trains are cheaper than flying, especially when you consider that you have to get to/from airports. I'm going to London in my easter holidays and it's looking like it will be around £140 return for two people on the train.

Very quick check on thetrainline.com shows a super offpeak return at £108 restricted trains of course so read the rules.

Oh and when your looking at flying consider the extra time at the airport and the fact the airports tend to be miles from anywhere and you might actually find the trains the better option.

Does not seem cheap as i know that if i walk in to a travel agent today I can get a return train to london (from newcastle on the same line) and 2 nights hotel accomadation for around a £100 (that sometimes even includes a theatre ticket).

This - I'm at uni in Edinburgh and live in Cambridge. My journey home was £9 because I booked in September. :)

As above, check shortly after fares are announced for the best deals - it helps if you're flexible with times too, as different times of day can make a big difference.

I'm also at uni in Edinburgh, and also live in Cambridge - and also got my last ticket for £9. Are you me? :p

With trains, book early to get the cheapest fare. Also experiment with doing multiple singles eg. London > York > Edinburgh, or other place directly en-route.

there's a sleeper train between edinburgh and london which might be worth considering but don't know what the fares are like

edit: don't run saturday nights though
