do what my flat mate did.. let it irritate you to the point where you feel compelled to go round and nearly knock there door down you bang so hard on it then when they answer offer them all out, worked a treat.. they didnt park there again and moved out 2 months later

I get asked for quarterly readings. I tend to do a reading roughly half way in between and either submit it online or just make a note.
Means I have a reasonable idea whats going on.
I can change my DD online (although I am not sure how the formula they use works as it always suggest paying more when the account credit is high and less when the account is about right). Or I can ring them to change the DD amount.
I get 4% discount for paying by DD so I am better off that way as now way could I gain that in interest holding the money elsewhere.
One other hidden possibl ebenefit, some utilities companies are providing details of late or unpaid bills to Equifax, Experian etc. You wont get that issue with DD but if you miss paying a it you could see it on your credit rating. I believe this will become more prevalent in future.

Sounds like what happened to us when changing energy suppliers, from Eon to Sainsburys. We sent in our last reading but it must have got there a bit late so they sent someone round to check our electricity.
Instead of writing down 33617 he wrote down 39826 so our final bill was over £700. Needless to say we weren't happy and when I queried it with them they had the reading I sent in on record 
. The only thing I had to do was cancel the DD on my account because apparently the dispute takes up to 45 days to go through and the bill was due to be paid the following week.

Well in that case you're a very lucky boy!
I still can't see why they would have refunded sums to you if you'd been using the energy they had been providing. Strange, but a bit of a result for you nontheless.
I know! I found another case where the meter of a house was unregistered after an extension was built. For TEN YEARS they didn't have to pay!
They way it works is that the gas supply isn't 'owned' by anyone so no company can bill you. Even now, I could probably tell BG to go away and not contact any other company and I'd probably get it free for a long time. But I'm too honest for that, even when it comes to rip-off energy suppliers.

I used to work for a major electricity / gas seller. One of the high up blokes said that they had at least 30000 unknown records on their accounts. Basically they have the mpan number but no other details, no meter readings, no address
Ecoes will hold address details (even historic) for all mpan/mprn numbers.

I always check my readings and submit, usually once a month. That way it is easier to track usage and ensure the DD is correct. Also you build up a good history to compare when it is time to change tariff. We pay around £120 now per month for gas and electricity (we use a lot of leccy, dishwasher daily, washing machine 1-2 times a day, over use of underfloor heating, lots of gadgets )
