Guys

Is Chip n Pin a UK system or is it the same world wide. Thinking about my Hols at Xmas and wonderd if I had to use Pin or sign Visa receipt

Not sure if its just UK, but i know India doesn't have it, I don't think canada does either but sure about that.

Don't know about other countries.

Chip n Pin is used in like 2% of the US, it is used in other areas of Europe and across the world, France have had it for a long time.

Where are you travelling?

Chip and pin has been used in France and other European countries for years.

If a country doesn't use chip and pin, they'll just let you sign.

Then i doubt you will need to worry, most of the US will only need your ID when you present a Credit Card.

Just make sure you know your PIN's incase - i just showed ID in Vegas and that was in March - i had a guy from Ohio on the phone last night and he said that security in the states for Fraud was abismal and that they dont have Chip n Pin yet.

Canada definitely has it, well Toronto has dunno about other parts of Canada but you cant use your uk debit card or uk credit card there, only canadian bank debit cards/credit cards can be used with their chip and pin machines.

They have actually had it longer than the uk has had it, for at least a good couple of years before the Uk jumped on the bandwagon.

Ah, I see.
My relatives from toronto came here last month and when my uncle used his credit card, had to sign the receipt. i just assumed that his card didn't have chip and pin so canada didn't have it.
my mistake.

So when in Toronto is the only option travellers cheques/cash then ?

I was under the impression it was us that were behind when it came to chip and pin. I met some guys form New Zealand on Sunday and they have been over here for about five years. They were confused as to why chip and pin was being hailed as this all new advanced technology when they have had it for about 14 years.

Same thing i have to do when im in Canada myself, if i pay with my Visa/Mastercard credit cards i usually have to sign the receipt as my card wotn work with their chip and pin machines even though both cc's are chip and pin enabled...but only enabled for uk chip and pin.

But i do have a canadian bank account with a debit card which i can use with their chip and pin machines.

Well not really, you can use both of those payment methods etc. But if your paying with a uk credit card ie your card is registered in the uk then you just sign the receipt as we used to do here.

If you have a maestro card then you can withdraw cash from their ATM machines there although you will be charged a fee. Sometimes i will do that, take out money there from my hsbc account using my maestro card...but usually i dont.

We are one of the strictest for it atm, but not exactly behind - a lot of countries still dont use it.

Loki - just find out what your PIN's are if your not away till XMas - wont be an issue anyway if they are C&P.

But with the size of both US/Canada only small areas use them - and a lot of the time you can override it like you could here a few months back
