Hi,

Im new to the forum so hello peeps.

I know this question is probably asked loads and you will all be going yaaawwwnnnn.... but....

I was wondering if any of you had any input into the following netbooks or possibly suggest alternatives.

Im looking for a new netbook and I keep thinking maybe I should hold off and wait for new ones to come out and this has been going on a while now as with all computer related stuff there is always something newer and better round the corner.

The netbook will be taken away with me while on business (for my personal use not business) so will be used on the plane, airports, at the hotel etc and will be used for the internet, skype, watching movies/tv shows etc and if possible wee bit of games too (nothing too heavy though). So im looking for something which is light, good battery and can handle everything I need while away.

After looking into it for some time, im kinda leaning towards one of 4 machines:

HP/Comaq mini 311 - Gets positive reviews and has the ION thing going on so can play games of sorts on it... however its the heaviest of the bunch and has the n270 processor (although from what I've read i wont really notice the difference) and I think the least battery life.

Asus EEE 1005HA - Also gets good reviews, has the n280 processor, fantastic battery life, fairly light, however has a smaller resolution and the GMA gfx.

Asus EEE 1008HA - The lightest of the lot, n280 processor, good battery life, however upgrades are not easy, same resolution as the 1005HA

Toshiba NB200 (one of the flavours since there is a few) - Again good reviews, fairly light, n280 processor, same resolution as the previous and excellent battery life again

I've had a netbook myself.

Samsung NC10 (in black).

Mine was upgraded to 2Gb DDR2 800Mhz ram and I had a 500Gb SATA drive fitted to replace the standard 160Gb. With the newer BIOS updates, you can also up the graphics ram to nearly 256Mb from the standard 64Mb.

I also used mine for quite heavy intensive 3D modelling applications and also for gaming, and it just lapped it all up.

Not sure what the newer Samsungs are like now though...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply... think the NC10 is pretty outdated these days isnt it?

Anyone got any other suggestions or comments on the 4 I narrowed it down to? I'm hoping to order it this week.

I purchashed the 1005HA ( n270 version )a few weeks ago and have had no issues with it.

I fired on Win7 pretty much as soon as i got it and i have to say it flies with the stock 1GB ram

The resolution is not really an issue for me. I have only found 1 program that i cant use so far ( VDJ )

I have not used my Main PC since i have got it ( the missues now uses the main PC )

I have even installed Kanes wrath on it even tho a tad slow it works :)

I went for the 1005HA (also the 270 version) last weekend and it's a great piece of kit, very happy with it (think I wrote a mini review on here about it too). Unlike Davyb I use Linux so I put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on mine (which is excellent) and it's perfectly fine for almost everything I need it for.

Thanks for the replies.

I've narrowed it down to the 1005HA n280 version due to the battery life and the Compaq mini 311 because of the multimedia capabilites just cant make up my mind if i want to sacrifice battery life for a bit of graphics umph.

I can get them pretty much for the same price... due to discounts etc so its a tough one for me

I also have the 1005HA n280.

I think it's fantastic. I had a go on a friends NC10 when I was looking for a netbook and wasn't impressed at all, in fact it nearly put me off getting one!

I have watched loads of films on my 1005HA, the screen is great. 3 hours of films, with the speakers on loudest, reduced the battery to just above half too.....

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I was wondering, do you still have the box for it? whats the weight of the netbook? As i seem to see different weights on different websites, some say 1.2 others say 1.4

Do you find the smaller resolution an issue at all?

Thanks

Hi

Ive just bought an Acer 1810TZ, it is dual core, 11.6 HD screen, 3GB ram, 250GB HD, lovely little machine, battery life is 8 hours plus, but it costs upwards of £400, is your budget lower than that?

Thanks
