Chrome finishes 2010 with 10 percent share

Holy misleading title unless I'm reading that "article" wrong...

The bug was one of about 100 found by noted browser vulnerability researcher and Google security engineer Michal Zalewski using a new "fuzzing" tool. The vulnerabilities were in IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera.

Well I think the point of the article was that while the other vendors patched (most) of the vulns found, MS said they could not recreate it using the same code so put it on the "do one" pile.

But when release day came near and MS realised it would cause bad PR they suddenly said they can recreate it and that he should hold off the release as it would be bad PR.

The exploit is still unpatched in IE is it not?

I do like chrome because I can login with my gmail account details on the 3 computers i own and the bookmarks, extensions etc are replicated perfectly. It is nice and simple, quick and reliable. I'm sure I could do that with other browsers but it's just there and it just works.

Firefox was good, great for work as certain plugins are more mature for it but for home use I find it quite dated.

the performance argument always makes me laugh. nevermind people's dodgy connections or the sometimes overloaded websites we access. the browser is SO important.

as for security? meh. people without a clue are still going to download and install rubbish regardless of what browser they use. ok having a "secure" browser may reduce the risk of being compromised from simply visiting a dodgy page but it's not something i'm going to concern myself with.

Okay, am I reading it wrong or is this just laced to death with FAIL?

Of course browsers perform differently. I'll be the first to admit that IE6 is the slowest heap of junk ever known to man, with IE7 a lot better but still well behind FF at the time.

IE8 was again an improvement but it's taken to IE9 to get a real good speed bump out of it.

As for security, again, would you use IE6 as your regular browser? The thing had more holes than a damaged colinder. Using an up-to-date browser is important to security - sure you could probably go back a year or two without danger, but longer than that...?

for you, obviously not. but for me, this is where it's at. extensions are the most important thing to me. it's a little something called personal preference. i think i'm still allowed to have one.

You're allowed your opinion of course, but it's a damn strange one. It's like going to buy a car, and settling for anything, even if it's slow and unreliable, as long as it's got all the optional extras.

Since IE9 isn't fully baked yet I'll leave that out, but the one thing that prevents me from using IE8 in any way is that split second lag when you click on the new tab button - at first I thought it was because of the new tab page they offer but it continues to do it even if a new tab is set to open empty. In every other current shipping browser it's immediate.

<tosh about IE6>

what the fudge are you on about? did i really have to say "modern" browser? any buffoon with half a brain would realise i wasn't talking about something that was released 9 years ago.

i (maybe wrongly) assumed whatever browser people choose to use would at least be the latest version.

You weren't specific at all. Don't lash out at me because you can't construct posts properly.

I've read this whole thread so far, and it seems you are the only one who can't construct posts properly. Browser debate completely aside, your comments are by far the most aggravating.

I guess that depends which side of the fence you're coming from.

I've re-read them and there's nothing wrong with my posts at all. The only people I can see who would have a problem is those who would want to.

Then again, I'm out. Clearly it's just taboo to like IE on these forums.

Nobody is saying that IE is a taboo subject, well you are now though. The reason people are up in arms is because you stated IE was better than the competition.

It is not.

*sigh*

I stated that IE was more than a match for FF, which it damn well is. I've posted a link backing this up. You came on and went off about extensions, which whilst nice to have, don't make the browser.

It's not exactly hardly known that browsers are generally judged on two things - compliance and speed. After all - that's why we have things like the Acid test. I posted a link (admittedly about betas, which is why I was loathed to post it as the builds change weekly) but then I get some post poo-pooing speed tests?

I then go on to prove him wrong, at which point (like most FF users, not you Khan) he goes off on one.

Then we get the usual FF fanboy response, which is where they all pile into the thread to call my posts crap without even trying to prove me wrong.

Seriously, if you want to link me to a recent speed/compliance test with both betas, and it shows FF on top, i'll happily admit defeat. But at the moment it looks like standard "toys out of the pram" fayre.

[Edit] In fact, it was FF fanboy crap that started this - "I just cannot comprehend why all those people still use IE."

I might have come across as "anti IE9". I'm not at all, I like it so far. I posted that link because some guy was claiming it was better than every other bowser in pretty much every respect - which is untrue.

You came on and went off about extensions, which whilst nice to have, don't make the browser.

I tend to disagree there. Having an extension/add on gallery for me is a massive plus.

Actually I'm quite surprised so many ocuk forum users don't seem to care about extensions etc. I couldn't live without adblock plus, Lastpass, Better Gmail, Goo.gl... and the list goes on. I'd have thought most "techie" people would be the same :p

PS I'm a Chrome user since it got the extension gallery.

I switched to Firefox a few years back, due to tabbed browsing. Over the years Firefox has got slower at starting up and browsing for some reason.
Today tried all except IE which i have played with recently so this is how i found the choice:

Opera: Nice and quick but the major flaw is no adblock plus the opera version is hopeless!! I do like the home page you can edit for quick links to your favourite web pages.

Firefox Beta 4: Better for Firefox but looks like a Chrome/Opera rip off, may be good but i did not give it a chance tbh.

Google Chrome: Really fast start up, good for netbooks/slow processors. Has all the add ons/extensions you need addblock plus and what not and recently viewed pages you can flirt to when needed.

I think IE9 is ok but obviously microsoft have ripped off opera/firefox in the way they now have tabbed browsing.
Microsoft need to be a bit more creative to get my vote.

I've never felt the need to run any extensions on Firefox or Chrome when I tested it out.

Not even the OCUK extension for firefox...shame on you....

:D

As I'm the keeper of the Firefox extension for OCUK most of FF's problems with starting up seem to be with extensions that hang the start up until they get a network response. This includes the password sync/bookmark sync stuff etc. FF4 is much better in this respect but can still hang a little. IE9 should be the fastest, they can utilise whatever they want from their OS, including undocumented calls...pity it looks like it's gonna be Vista/7 only, and missing a fair few nice features on Vista. Otherwise all the latest major browser versions are very good at general browsing. Heck even Safari is alright..for an Apple product!
