Decided to watch this on Channel 4 after seeing it's ranked #18th on IMDB.

I've never heard of the film before today, subtitles got a bit annoying at the start but I got used to them after a while.

I thought it was a very good film though. Well worth staying up for.

What did everyone else think?

Yeah, not bad - not one you'd want to watch again though.

I think you can definitely watch it again. It's got some great humour at times. :)

Agree with Big Kev - great film.

I've watched this film 6 times now, so i'd say you can definately watch it again :p

Also agree, there is good humour at times, something I didn't pick up on upon first viewing (apart from the obvious "banana scene")

Gives a real insight into the brazilain slums, comparing it with the 'real deal', it really isn't far off. If anything, it's a lot tamer.

Saw this a couple of years after release, it's a good film although it didn't live up to the hype for me.

In some ways I think this type of film is more effective as a foreign/low budget affair, as (except for when extremely good acting is involved) it's often hard to fully tune in to ghetto culture when Hollywood superstars are involved. When you don't recognise the actors they are somehow more believable in these type of roles.

agreed, so many things you spot on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th ... viewings you dont notice at first. Got it on DVD after reading about it, and wasnt disappointed.

I watched a tiny part of it last night, but have seen it before. Perhaps a couple of times. Fantastic film -- one of my favourites.

On a similar note then has anybody watched City of Men which was released afterwards? I think its more of a series than a film but still looks alright

Yeah I read about that, apparently it was on BBC4.

I'm tempted buy buy the series as the rating on that is pretty good too.

Same here. Plus it has the (dubious) honour of being the only film I have witnessed an audience applaud at the end.

I need to get this on DVD. Was going to watch it last night but I was tired :( Fell asleep 5 minutes in!

[edit] Just ordered for £5.23 delivered! :D

I've never understood the audience clapping thing, not like its a premiere or something where people involved would know about it.
Happenedwhen i saw King kong and just thought people were weird

Agreed, as for clapping King Kong, that's utter idiocy it was an average film at best
