Yay or nay? Found one locally for £2k, 4-door Y-reg 1.1litre. Looks in decent shape and all, and unfortunately boy racer culture has increased the insurance premium to a healthy £2k! (cheapeast quote I've ever been given is £1.6k for Seat Arosa, so I'm not too sure how bad it is).

What I'm after here is opinions on Citroen and perhaps more importantly, the Saxo and its suitability as a first car for someone who passed their test a few months ago :)

I can pretty much guaruntee(sp?) that people will come in here and say something along the lines of "don't buy french, it'll explode or something"

Personally, it seems a bit expensive for a 1-1 Saxo, I'd suggest having a look around for a 1.25 Fiesta, my girlfriend had one as her first car, excellent as a first car :)

Sorry for hijack but just wondering how much do Fiesta 1.25's go for? Some people tell me you can get one for £1.5k and below but most of the ones I found is £2k+

Where are you looking?

My girlfriend's one was £2k for an R plate, LX Spec (PAS basically). That was at a garage, and IMO overpriced. So £1.5k is easily do-able.

How about a peugeot 106/306? 106 is the same car as the Saxo.

106 is technically the same car, but will cost more for no reason other than its not got a citroen badge.

The interior of the saxo is also more modern.

Personally though I'd not settle for anything less than a VTR, the "lesser" models are just crap really.

Saxos are good fun, light little runabouts. Power is distinctly lacking, but for your first car, you might not notice :D

Although I still feel like I upgraded when I went to a £500 N reg mondeo.

problem with saxos is, every boy racer has one and promptly drives it into a tree

hence insurance for youngsters on saxos isnt entirely pleasant.

i would advise against a saxo for the very reasons above.

....plus its french

In my opinion a first car is always gonna be a car that you will prang or dent or damage in some way because of the learning curve.

I am 22, and i passed when i was 18. My parents gave me a 1.0 Metro L 1989. Wasn't anything great or fantastic, but it was old and rubbish and when i did damage it, it didnt matter. The insurance was just under a grand for it, tax was dirt cheap.

I'm not sayin buy a metro (up to you what you buy) but i will advise you to not spend anything more than £500 on a first car and no more than £1300 on insurance.

Been looking on Pistonheads and Autotrader(can find some but the location is way up north and with me living in Greater London,a bit too far for me.

Yeah being ripped off there mate defo, I managed to get a 1.2 corsa for my first car around 900 quid for maybe a year or two older than what your looking at. Now days you can get a saxo vtr for 2k. I'd look at a corsa or fiesta to be honest, but if your set on the saxo, keep looking because you'lll find one a hell of a lot cheaper.

Cheers

I have been hearing lots about peopl having VTR's as their first cars, wondering wouldn't the insurance be ridiculous on something like that?

I have a Saxo VTR as my first car and insurance is £1045 with Admiral and i'm 19/m/0 NCB living in Southampton. They are pretty damn nippy cars for a first car and going from a 1.2 corsa learner car they seemed really fast and I found it hard at first to adjust to the extra power but eventually after 2 months use I have tamed the car :D

Get a few quotes on a Mk1 Clio 1.4 RT

I had a VTR as my third car after a year of driving and insurance was around £1,100. I would never have been able to insure one at 18 as my first car, thats for sure.

I wouldn't waste my time on anything less than a VTR either.

I have a VTR and it is good fun to drive. They do start to fall apart but mine has been reliable.

If you don't care about the image then go for it. I don't buy a car because it looks good and everyone thinks ace car. I buy a car because it's fun to drive.

A VTR is fun. If you can't afford the insurance on a VTR go for a Furio.

I personally wouldn't buy a Saxo again because they are becoming a little dated now. Interior space is a little cramped and for the money you spend on a Saxo, there are better cars out there when you overcome the insurance barrier.

If you want a crap P reg one. When buying a car like a Saxo, buy the newest one you can afford becuase the old ones have had it.

This is true but I was just saying, you can pick up a Saxo for £1k if you wanted too.

MK1 Corsa's seem popular. Are they good first cars?

Bit like saying 'Don't spend £15k on a Focus, there is one for sale near me with a dent in the wing, 100,000 more miles and 10 years older for £1000'.

No, they are absolutely horrible cars. I wouldn't wish one one my worst enemy.
