City Break somewhere in the UK

Edinburgh is good, but the Fringe usually prices up (already expensive) hotels even further up in price.

I'd be tempted to stay in Glasgow (they say it's 2nd to London for shopping), and get the train over to Edinburgh one evening for a show at the fringe and a nice dinner (though there are an abundance of good restaurants in Glasgow).

Puts the prices up massively! £100 a night? Good luck with that.

Also Edinburgh isn't too great for shopping.

Apart from that Edinburgh is awesome.

Top Bath Tip:

Stay in Bristol. Seriously. Hotels in Bath are bonkers expensive - even a travelodge will sometimes cost as much as £100 a night.

Bath Spa is just 11 minutes by train from Bristol Temple Meads and there are plenty of decent hotels around Bristol Temple Meads station, meaning you can either save a pile of cash on your hotel or stay in a far nicer hotel than you'd be able to afford in Bath for the same money.

York my hometown always seems to be a popular choice.
I'll second this. I took my Mrs a few weeks ago as I was working there and it's a great city. Very pretty, loads of shops, loads of nice bars and restaurants and lots to see and do too (Minster, Viking Museum, York Museum, Railway Museum, Tussauds Dungeon, York Eye/big wheel thing).

Another plug for York, went there for Valentine's day with the gf and it was great.

Glad you both liked York. Most place I go and when people ask where i'm from and I say York it mostly get a positive response.

Apart from the obvious sites , Yorks biggest plus point is how compact it is and the Bar walls which give you a great view of the City center
