Hey all, as mentioned in my last post i ws off the the car supermarket (available car, castle donnington) with the gf who was ooing & eeehing over all the minis she saw (Just gotta convince her to shell out the cash for one at some point now) I saw a couple of MG ZR's that until today i've been really really eager to change in my Fiesta for, then, i stumble upon this absolutely gorgeous beastie, Metallic Gray '04 Civic 1.6 Sport and am just wow'd, having seena few pics of that generation of civics around i was never that impressed, and the gear stick looked like a real PITA to me, god how wrong i was, the second i saw it my eyes lit up, looks amazing, feels great, comfy, tried a few shifts on the stick and it felt natural already, amazing and was just wowing over & over about how perfect it seemed as a step up from the 1.3 fiesta.

Sadly with 0 no claims after a bump last year i was worried about costs, but Elephant quoted me low £420's on 10 month bonus accelerator fully comp, so i was chuffed to say the least!

The car in question is £8,600, '04 and the only unknown factor is mileage as it was in the "just arrived" section, going to give them a call tomorrow to ask details on it.

Is the price for that car too much? Its in amazing looking condition, not a chip, dent or anything, i was loving the 8k rpm engine, spacious boot, 3 door (yep, i'm a 3door-holic as stated in the last post) with nice space in the back seats too, really was a joy and felt like my search for what i wanted to go to next was finally at an end!

I know it doesn't have the speed, power, handling etc.. of the Type-R and i'm not gonna pretend it does, but i'm sure it'll be nice, handle well, be quieter & easier on the motorway unlike the Fiesta.

The main thing is the price, what would really be an ideal price for this kind of age car? I know if i went for the 8.6k it way out of my budget and would have to half finance, but right now, i could really care less!!

Anyone? :D

We had one as a courtesy car when someone went into the back of our Polo... Not a bad little car by any means... Missus found the ride a little firm... but I liked it... I always really like the style of that Mk too...

Price doesn't seem too shocking for a car supermarket... did you find out the mileage yet? Shouldn't really be much over 30k at that asking price... and don't forget you can usually barter them down a few hundred quid... If you aren't fussed about the piece of mind you get from a dealer you could probably get one for about £6.8k private...

Hope you enjoy the test drive...

Cheers,
Melon.

The dealer peace of mind really isn't a deciding factor, but i can't seem to find any private for 6kish, if i could, i would as i can probably either stretch my budget & buy one right out, but this one would be financed, which i'm not sure is a good idea or not (Have a 17k loan being paid off asap but its also important to me to get a car that'll last me a good long time (5+) as i'm looking into getting a mortgage this october.

The car supermarket just mentioned "fixed cost no budging" about 4 times ina 3 mins phone call, so i'm not too sure they'll be a-budgin' on that!

I think the thing about this car i'm drawn to is that it basically has everything i want, pretty new, nice looks w/ quirkiness (gearstick!) but all in all a good solid car with a great company name & a good standard of reliability!

I'm really unsure about getting it or not, buying outright cheaper somewhere, financing this, or paying a 3k first payment to bring it down to 175 a month for 3 years.

 :D

Calm down and get a reality check. This is a 1.6 litre Honda Civic. It is a mass produced, mass market hatchback. Is it not an Aston Martin.

You can't afford it, yet are going to buy it anyway? This is very foolish especially when you consider how ordinary the car is. There are numerous cars which are just as good as this Civic for as little as HALF the price which you CAN afford.

There is simply no point going beyond your means for any car, even if its truely special, let alone one like a 1.6 Civic.

You keep going on about how much of a step up it is from your 1.3 Fiesta. With respect, anything you view will be a step up, it's not that the Civic is amazing, it's par for the course for cars like this.

Calm down, get some perspective, and realise that buying this car is a bad idea.

I'm not getting "over excited" its just nice to find something that checks every box, really.

Yep, i know everything will be a step up and i'm aware of that, but anything thats half the price and the same comparison i would be happy to hear your views on :)

And yep, i'm aware its not a rocket and is quite a lot of cash, which is why a per month deal would maybe suit me on this if i were to go for it.

But like i said, any suggestions you'd happen to have i'd happily hear ;)

*Is calm & in perspective* but a test drive can't hurt :)

Do NOT buy a car you can't afford and if you are this excited about a car you've never driven, driving it is only going to make you worse as it'll feel miles better than a 1.3 Fiesta.

Spend £4-5k on something like a Ford Focus, Seat Leon, that sort of thing. 90% of the car for 50% of the price.

Then you can actually ENJOY owning your car rather than spend every month worrying where the next finance payment is coming from.

Unless you crave something truely special - anda 1.6 Civic is not it - there is simply no need to eyeball yourself up with finance you can barely afford.

agreed

the appeal will wear off eventually, and you're going to be stuck paying repayments you cant afford for a car that no longer seems special

we've all been there. all of us drove crappy first cars and everything after that just seems so luxurious and exotic. My first car was a banged out F reg mazda. The 1.4 P reg polo i got after that seemed like luxury at the time, but it was only after i'd had it a year or two, it dawned on me who un special it actually was.

seriously a 1.6 civic isnt worth repayments you can't afford. Maybe settle for a normal civic but get an older one that you can maybe afford ?

My mate has one of these and it is quite nice but they seem overpriced for what they are. He paid about 10k for his in dec but the car doesnt really have anything that mine doesn't (performance or spec wise minus ellecy mirrors) My car was 7k (1.6 focus) I would simply find it hard to justify the price/debt.

Try as suggested look at a normal civic as the sport only really seems to be for a body kit, different wheels and a "sport" interior.

Yep, i know you're probably right on this matter, and doing this probably isn't the best option, maybe just it being the 1 car out of 2000 yesterday that caught my eye and make me double take.

I'm not all about massive speed, would i like a performance upgrade from what i have now, yep, undoubtedly, but i'm trying to find something that will give that, with the looks that i like also, which is why that grabbed me so much, nice enough engine capacity for me, looks amazing, everything i would need in it, but i know i am being semi-irrational when i set myself a 5-6k budget tops and see this.

I would ask how the 1.4 versions of the same car go, but i know the Sport has the Type-R bodykit which makes it look so nice, hmm...aside from the ******* MG ZR this is the only car that has really caught my eye, Focuses while nice just seem a bit too "blah" and really don't like the look/feel of the Leons i saw & sat in yesterday :(

I know "being able to easily afford the monthly payments" doesn't mean you can afford the car, and i really shouldn't be walking into that trap :(

How well do the 1.6 Honda engines last? Actually saw a 93k one for about 5,600! But i'm not too keen on something with too many miles on :D

If you like the look of the Civic go for it.

I do share Fox's sentiments concerning finance and affordability. But again, that is your decision.

Enjoy your purchase.

Poor advice - I like the look of the new 335i doesnt mean I should cripple myself and go for it..

That is your choice to buy or not to buy that car.

Like I said. I agree with you about not buying a car you can't afford but it is not our decision.

seriously look around for something cheaper. I've used my sister in laws leicester postcode to search, so is within 28 miles of leicester. If your looking at cars over in castle donnington, this cant be far :)

we're not suggesting the Civic is a bad car. Just saying its not worth getting so far into debt for. Look around and find something else thats a bit more affordable

Not worth getting into debt over a underpowered civic breadvan, if it was a R then i would be more understanding, some things in life are worth struggling over, unfortuantly this isn't one of them.

Yeah, i'd say you're prob right on that score, i'll have a browse around again :D

Anything you'd suggest other than Focus/Leon?
