Civic Type-R (EP3) service history

In the market for exactly the same thing at the moment. Would be moving from a Celica 140 so it will be a big step up in terms of speed compared to OP.

Any big things to look out for when buying?

Do yourself a favor and sign up here and have a look. http://www.civictype-r.co.uk/forum/

You can't go wrong, loads of info, loads to search.

I got my CTR private and nothing went wrong in 2 years, and i thrashed the hell out of it, like your supposed to lol.

Definatly check the gearbox in the cold, though if it's hard going into 2nd thats normal. Says all on the buyers guide.

I'm not sure I'd buy a civic given my current car I'm not sure it would be a big enough gap

But then I'm a upwards or nowhere kind of guy

I just see no advantages to owning one other than a BMW 330 other an costs to run
The power delivery I think would be annoying after a car that is A) faster B) doesn't need to to reved to 9 million

I imagine a 330 sounds better and uses about the same fuel too
? Or close enough for it to be swings and roundabouts idd have thought

Also its no more practical really.

I would have thought a s3 would be a better choice. But I have no idea as to cost and the various other stuff
That's not to say I would want one having owned a 330 though

Anyway each to there own etc
Still a bloody good / fun car at the end if the day

Well its a very different sort of car, so if thats what he's after then it will have advantages over a 330Ci though. You are right, it's an odd upgrade path, it isnt really an upgrade path at all. Thats why it confused me - he seems to be tumbling DOWN the car ladder. Starts with a Z4, sells it to 'release cash' but then ends up spending almost what he paid for the Z4 on a 330Ci anyway, which he then declares as excellent and much nicer and more refined than the Z4, then suddenly the 330Ci is sold in such a rush he's not even decided fully on what to replace it with yet, and then decides to get... a Honda Civic?

Everyone said buying the 330Ci after the Z4 given his intentions from the purchase was a bit of an odd idea and that something different was the way forward but he ignored everyone and got the 330Ci anyway.

I seem to remember the 330Ci was a top dollar example as well - out of interest how much did you get for it?

Ah well - it's this sort of random stuff that makes OcUK interesting to read. You never quite know what people are going to do next :p

I'd get the Clio 182 - infact, I'd have got the Clio 182 in the first place.

It sold for £6500 and it never cost me a penny other than 3 litres of castrol edge. First person to come and look at it within 5 days of it going on pistonheads took it away the same day.

It was a nice car to own and I'm glad I had one. There might be some truth in saying I should have gone straight for a Clio 182 straight away but then I've had the experience of owning a 330ci on the way and I'm happy at that. It may not be 100% logical but my needs and wants are different now that I've got a house. I'd love a Z4 sitting on the drive waiting for some occasional use, but I just can't justify spending that sort of a money on a car. I'd rather spend it on the house, holidays and having fun with the GF.

The 330 hadn't been used for 3 weeks and it was looking like staying that way for quite a while with the occasional use at the weekend. It wasn't fun enough to be just a weekend car. I'm lucky if I do 60 miles a week in my own car at the moment.

Thats why Im not too arsed about refinement, electric memory seats and auto dimming rear view mirrors. I want something that I can jump in on a saturday and put a smile on my face for the few journeys that I make.

I've always had a thing for the Clio 182 since I first saw one in a showroom, I know everything I need to know about them thats why Im asking about other similar cars (Civic) that I don't know so much about.

Elise, or Westfield then...

I see
I can see what youre doing now ish but I think if I was in your place I would go for a sports car of some description

(ok I guess you can say a civic is a sports car in a way but you know what I mean , a proper driving tool, but I have no Idea what you can get for your money its easy what to recommend for less or more ie. 3.5 k gets you a mr2 turbo a little more than the bmws sale value would probably be needed for a elise, s2000 or z4 type car

However I dont know what your budget is though but a nice civic is like 6k plus no
?

I do get IT a little but are you positive it wouldn't bore you in five minutes?

If you must go hatch back have you considered German?
A r32 would be a bit more bearable after a 6 cylinder imo

(again no idea as to how much they are but can't be much more than a Jewish.civic can they? Or did I just fail big time ?

Can't see how this is a good suggestion at all. It doesnt fit any of his criteria and arguably once you lock the VW fanboys in a room it's inferior to a 330Ci in almost every way - at least something like a Type R or a 182 is different to a 330Ci.

If I had the money I'd go out and buy a Lotus Elise S2 right now. That would fill my weekend car needs perfectly.

I have the budget to get a BMW Z4 2.5i with decent mileage and basic spec - around £8500 - but putting a serious head on for a moment though it would be a complete waste of money IMO.

How much I can spend and how much would be ideal to spend on a car that will get very little use are 2 seperate things.

Looking at very tidy Clio 182's for around the £4.5k mark at the moment and it just seems like a total no brainer to me for a such a fun car.

Errr you'd be back where you were before only with a slower car with the same running costs. The 'I told you so' posts would be funny though :D

Pistonheads classifieds suck. I've only just realised the premium adverts and the standards adverts are totally seperate :o

I think I'd keep that a secret if it happened :D

CTR over a 182. 172 cup maybe......... but the CTR is quicker, better engine, better gearbox, more reliable.

Clio williams above a 182!:D 3k hehe http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1830947.htm

Still don't see the point in a hatchback as a weekend toy.

A DC2 would be better than both the CTR and 172, ok so it's older, but so what if you get a good one.

Elise would be awesome.

Mazda RX-8? Great chassis. Meh lol.

I just can't understand this OCUK love of the Clio 172/182. I've driven several, and some have been low mileage originals, and ok they are quick, but there's just so much that goes wrong with them. I'd be too scared to drive it like your supposed to incase I broke something.
They just can't put the power down in the wet, most have been abused which they won't stand up to. If you buy a hot hatch chances are you'll drive it hard at some point, so why buy a car thats so easy to break?
A CTR/ITR on the other hand, you can drive however you want with the confidence that you really have little chance of breaking it unless you do something really stupid.
The wild card could be the 190bhp Celica, but to me there's just too little power below 6000rpm to the point it seems really sluggish.
S3? hmm, its not really going to be any faster, 225bhp + the weight of an audi + quattro system means the civic is still gonna at the very least match it, and you'd have to pay well over the top to get an "S" badge.

And if people think the Civic interior isn't very good, they should sit in a 172 lol.

My mate had a 172 cup, modded with exhaust, breathing, etc and it stayed with my CTR till about 60mph, then it was bye bye. He also had to brake about 500 miles before, because no ABS and the brakes on the whole are crap.

I agree with you on the 172/182, maybe cus there cheap and fun? In the 2 years he had it i think he spent 1k on fixing it. I had to replace the battery in my CTR because i left the light on once.:D

The 200cup is nice mind!:D

It's a brilliant fun little car, thats why. It's quick, it handles really well, isnt that the whole point?

So is the CTR, and it's more reliable, better built, and has a much better gearbox, brakes, and seats.

A 172 cup for 3-4k would make sense though, they are fun granted.
