Clinton Cards to go into Administration

The online era is a double edge sword though. Do we really want to see the centre of our cities empty and full of charity shops whilst everyone stays indoors? Taken to its logical conclusion one day you'll need 24 hours notice to buy pretty much anything. All in the name of saving a few quid. Great.

Comet are about to close 150 stores throughout the UK too.

I agree entirely. However, the sheer amount of towns and cities makes it impractical for stores to come to every person. An emphasis now seems to have changed whereby stores are making people come to them rather than the other way round.

For example, a shop like Game, could do more business in 1 store in Bluewater, than it could manage in 10 other stores.

These massive centres are rising all the time. Where I live we already have Lakeside, Bluewater, The Glades and some new massive one called Westfield, wherever that is.

All giving the shopper the convenience of undercover shopping, away from the elements, and most have good entertainment and food as well. I mean Bluewater's food choice now is unbelievable!

The regular high street will die unfortunately, and we will live in a land of supermarkets, shopping centres and online retail.

I'm sure there was a time where we mostly shopped at market stalls and street fares and then shops started popping up and people probably said a similar thing then as they are now about the internet.

As much as I think cards are a waste of time/money/resources etc. it's sad to potentially see so many jobs go.

+1

I feel exactly the same. I have massive sympathy for all who might lose their jobs but I feel the greeting card business is one the most wasteful things humans have ever come up with.

Sending bits of overpriced stiff paper to people to show you care. C'mon!

With all this "go green" stuff being thrown at us somehow the greeting card industry seems to have escaped!!

Card Factory is always my first port of call simply because they are so cheap and I find the whole card thing annoying so wish to spend as little as possible on it. However there is no denying that the quality of card from Card Factory does reflect the lower price. They are less well made, the materials feel cheaper and the designs are far more generic. This doesn't bother me because the fact its 89p not £3.89 makes up for it but I do sometimes find myself in Clintons buying a card thats just, well, better when I come up short at Card Factory.

If you can bring yourself to go there, Chaplins also does stupidly low priced cards (sensible prices).

BTW.. I just spent $40 on two cards today from Moonpig. Fed Ex next day delivery though lol. Does annoy me they charge two times the fedex price for two cards going to the same address. Needed to get it done quickly though lol.

What, people said 'Look, shops keep appearing, soon we'll need to wait 24 hours for everything we want to buy'? :p

GAME have not collapsed - they've simply had the un-neccesary stores trimmed so its about the size it should have been now and is still trading.
Terrible assumption on my part (sincerely). Haven't read the news recently but I've just read about OpCapita's purchase of 333 Game stores.
