I don't venture too far out of F1 related threads in Motors, so bear with me :p

I'm going for a drive in a 2005 Clio 182 tomorrow (Full fat + cup packs). I know there are quite a few threads on here about the Clio sports, but I didn't find one that helped me.

Are there any particular things I should look out for? Any well known issues or problems that should be avoided at all costs?

Cheers.

Gearboxes are like chocolate, as are the engine mounts. Check the gearstick for wobble when coming off the throttle sharply in 2nd. It shouldn't move too much. Apart from that, it's pretty much common sense - there are other issues, though you're probably best asking at a dedicated Renault site like www.renaultsportsclub.co.uk or www.cliosport.net :)

as they have engine mounts problems can make gear selection difficult so boxes tend to get mashed. plus they were never the strongest boxes but saying that they last well if not driven by an unsympathetic driver.

Got it in one, don't treat the box with some sympathy and you'll have problems. Leave off hard + fast changes all the time and it'll be fine, no problems with mine yet touch wood. The boxes are rated for 200nm which is what the car puts out, but it's right at the upper limit.

Lower engine (dog bone) mount has bushes that wear out quickly for some people. It's not expensive to fix so I wouldn't worry about it, but I would be wary of "uprated" mounts especially ones that use powerflex bushes. As there's no flex on this mount with them installed is wears the others out a lot quicker, and they are harder to change iirc.

Exhausts on 172s like to rot and break around 40k, not sure if 182s are the same though.

Cool, cheers for the replies.

The one I'm driving tomorrow is from a poncy posh dealer who are asking for the best part of £10k. Granted the car only has 20,000 miles on the clock but there's no way I'm buying this particular one! Hopefully looking to spend more like £8k :)

Yeah 10k is definitely a jip. My sister got her 04 plate 182 (cup pack) for just less than 8k about 8 months ago and its a textbook example with < 25k on the clock. :)

It was a great fun! Took it around on a few b-roads and a dual carriageway, definitely put a smile on my face.

Interior was a little on the tacky side but I guess I can't expect too much more for my money.

Need to sort some finances out but I think I'll be buying one in the next month or so :D

had a few waterpump issues with that lump and as mentioned the engine mounts go, imho the gearbox side mount is the worst offender.

but its a renault so you have to expect horrible issues.

:p

Exactly, and sadly whilst there are other hatches out there for the money I've always found french hot hatches to be relatively good value for money.

For the equivelent age ctr/golf gti etc you'd pay a lot more, and whilst the build will be better it won't necessarily be more fun :)
