Coca Cola...

The wife of a good friend worked for the Coca Cola company and commented that the formula is allegedly not the same from country to country. I have no reason to doubt what she said but I also have not looked for any evidence to back that comment up.

They do have different recipes, for most drinks for different markets. It seems to be Eu, England, US, Mid east at the very least get varying flavours, not sure if Japan/Russia/CHina get different versions or not.

Its because of varying things, different plants, different codes on what you can add and how much of certain additives can be used so you have to alter the recipe. I haven't had a normal coke/pepsi in so long I can't remember, does the UK version come with cornsyrup? I assume it doesn't, the US one does, they have an entire industry built around a ridiculous number of farmers growing cheap and fast growing corn, so they dump cornsyrup in absolutely everything, its vile stuff, literally kills you over time. IF the USA removed cornsyrup from everything(without replacing it with another sugar) obesity would fall dramatically, as would instances of heart disease and diabetes.

This is back to the whole thing that after the war the farmers of america came up with that food triangle we all should supposedly use, which magically comes up with their easiest and cheapest and most profitable crop as the thing you should eat most of. Carbs = bad, high gi carbs refined to the point of barely being a food anymore, turned into a syrup and stuck in everything possible = really really really really bad.

But afaik they change the flavour on purpose even if they are forced to use different additives, again because different countries like different things.

If you look into Mountain dew, I love the diet stuff, the American non diet has about 400 barrels of cornsyrup in a can, the diet has something else. They not to long ago started making a EU version again, not a diet version, but its again got a slightly different ingredient list and a different taste to the US version.

I really don't know how companies come up with a different taste for a different region, how do you quantify, come up with the idea that people from area X will like it slightly more/less sweeter, thicker, bitter, spicier.

But as said its also down to even the water, its not cost effective to make all worldwide coke in the USA from the same water and sugar and ship it worldwide, you make EU coke in the EU.

I try to avoid coca-cola products. There is some evidence of the Coca-Cola company being a rather ruthless organisation:

"Coca-Cola Company is perhaps the most widely recognized corporate symbol on the planet. The company also leads in the abuse of workers’ rights, assassinations, water privatization, and worker discrimination. Between 1989 and 2002, eight union leaders from Coca-Cola bottling plants in Colombia were killed after protesting the company’s labor practices. Hundreds of other Coca-Cola workers who have joined or considered joining the Colombian union SINALTRAINAL have been kidnapped, tortured, and detained by paramilitaries who are hired to intimidate workers to prevent them from unionizing.

In India, Coca-Cola destroys local agriculture by privatizing the country’s water resources. In Plachimada, Kerala, Coca-Cola extracted 1.5 million liters of deep well water, which they bottled and sold under the names Dasani and BonAqua. The groundwater was severely depleted, affecting thousands of communities with water shortages and destroying agricultural activity. As a result, the remaining water became contaminated with high chloride and bacteria levels, leading to scabs, eye problems, and stomach aches in the local population."

Mark Thomas did quite an interesting 'dispatches' on this some time ago. I think it may be on 4OD somewhere.

Don't like fizzy pop at all. I also think that coke isn't very nice at all. However I have been known to drink it when it's 30C+ outside and it's come from an ice cold fridge in a glass bottle.

Coca-Cola are the only company in the US allowed to import Coca for their product. As such, they rule the coca-flavoured market for cola. It's like having a monopoly on Vanilla or Orange.

Crazy!

I used to drink a lot of Coke and agree that glass bottles rule the way but i find it really sickly these days. I can literaly feel it rotting my teeth as i drink it plus finding it in glass bottles is tricky. Irn Bru all the way :D

Coca Cola is disgusting and should only be sold in 2l bottles with a packet of Mentos taped to it as that's all it's good for.

Ice cold Root Beer is the way forward.

Well done OCUK, i was in tesco earlier and spotted 6 GLASS BOTTLES of coke...which i bought and are now chilling in the fridge!
