COD Black Ops looks pretty good on PC

Ive found a very effective way to deal with Kittens knife running and its as easy as 1-2-3

1 take a step backwards as she approaches
2 take a step to the left or right as she approaches
3 let rip with your spas12 to her face :D

one shot should be enough but I usually double tap with it just to be certain her face has left thru the back of her skull :D

Most of the time i find it to late when running and come face to face with the enemy and if i have to think about what to do instead of hitting the knife button then i am already watching his kill cam knifing me in the face lol :(

I play literally with my thumb on my knife attack (mouse4) so I'm always ready to humiliate the tards running round with knives. However I refuse to play knife only I think it's stupid how a knife competes with a gun!

never had a problem with knife runners myself, tho I do tend to play hardcore (so you can drop them quick) over non-hardcore, non-hardcore in Black Ops is a little like running around with nerf guns :( (MW2 had much better balance there).

I've gotta say (so far) the single player in this is probably the worst out of the 7 COD games I've played. Am I the only one who thought it felt a helluva lot like Soldier of Fortune 3, a game which got widely panned (sub-50% on metacritic)? Right from the first mission it just felt.... wrong, an almost detached feel to combat, nothing like the grit we've seen in previous games (even the other Treyarch offering World at War). As mentioned by somebody above the mouse feels wrong (yes I have vsync off).

Got a feeling it might be because the game appears to be capped at 90fps and I have a 120hz monitor, will try some tweaks.

Default cap is 85fps (91fps actual due to rounding precision) however the problem with the mouse is related to the performance problem, when they fix that the mouse will feel better to.

The mouse felt fine to me, is it people with Windows 7 who have that issue because if so I suspect Windows 7's mouse acceleration is to blame.

I think the problem is the mouse isn't updating smoothly when the game is stuttering - the stuttering isn't always completely apparent visually every time its happening but always affecting the mouse "feel" when it happens.

To elaborate - at certain times *something* is taking longer to complete than normal and long enough to disrupt the constant frame update rate - I'm not sure if the stutter comes from the system being busy starving everything out or just that the next rendering update waits til that *something* is done before processing (end result is the same). On nVidia rendering hardware it can be seen by monitoring the threaded calls to QueryOglResource.

Both single and multiplayer are affected by the same performance issue, tho it should still be stuttery/choppy in both to the same degree tho feels worse online due to the different nature of the game.

For me it was a sound issue. I remembered a similar problem with world at war so I went through all the sample rate options in windows and found that DVD quality 48000 wiped the stuttering away for good :)

Give it a try

Tried disabling sound entirely even and the stutter doesn't go away... that said (I'd already enabled 48KHz DVD quality on my sound device to try) but after reading your post I set snd_khz to 48 ingame (shouldn't make any difference as AFAIK the game works at 44.1KHz regardless) but after the initial 30 seconds or so (which is always worst) it seemed to stutter quite a lot less often...

Rroff i know you probably have already but you have installed the dx9 distro June version right ? I know you know your stuff, im just lost as to what is the issue with your pc not running it right.

i went nuts fixing mine to the point of wasting some 12h+ on it..

Also and i know it wont fix it probably but can you save the overclock profile you have now, then run it at 100% stock everything. stock config file for mp too.

ill say it again, you are probably a more technical person than myself when it comes to all this but really i don't get it.

For me, single player runs perfectly smooth just like MW2.

Really disapointed. My main machine with the quad runs it perfect but I can't get my guest PCs or my brothers PCs running it without stuttering :( Only common aspect between them is the dual cores.

My friends and brothers can handle lowish frames but the stuttering just makes it unplayable.

I feel like I have tried every tweak that that has been posted. There was one patch a while back where it was very playable but the last two or three have been the same.

Could someone post a list just in case there is any I have missed?

Latest dx9
Latest drivers
mp config (commonly posted tweaks)
Disabling sound
Low in game settings

ps they run BFBC2 just fine which has to be far more demanding surely. What am I missing? How are you guys playing it smoothly?

Please help :)

Not if the stuttering is due to the main performance bug - your framerate doesn't matter - during certain events you get the same length pauses creating unsmooth rendering.

But why isn't everyone getting that same amount of stuttering if it was a bug for everyone?

I guess my frame rate is fine I only run at 1440 by 900 noooooooo I am screwed :'(

I'm not sure why some people don't seem to be affected by it. If your using VSync it helps to smooth it out a bit and mask the effect - at the expensive of input lag - and certain other things like sound setups can make it more noticeable.
