thinking about upgrading from my fx6300
I run a 780ti cpu currently.

Ill also need recommendations on RAM and MOBO's please?

not sure whether to go for ryzen or one of the new coffee lake CPU's now they are released im not so sure on what benefits ill have.

have seen some good things about the 8400 aswell as the 8600k some saying the 8400 is more than enough with a high boost clock speed?

Would like to play games such as pubg and destiny 2 at 1080p

TIA for any help.

Pubg and destiny 2 perform better on intel CPU's.
The 8400 is capable of extracting all the power from a 1080ti at 1080p.
The downside to the 8400 at the moment is it requires a Z series motherboard which cost more and doesnt allow the 8400 to be overclocked.
My advice here would be to wait until the lower end coffeelake boards get released and pair it with the 8400, or get the 8600k.

Of course there is ryzen but it doesn't perform as good as the 8400/8600k at 1080p

would a MOBO such as this not be any good?

what speed of Ram would you recommend?

If you could stretch a little more I'd recommend this board instead

The VRM's are much better on this board, though not really an issue if not overclocking to the max.

As for ram, in my own testing I saw diminishing returns after 3600CL16. I even got to 4000CL19 and the difference was almost nil.
3200-3600 should be good.
The lower end Coffee-lake boards might not support RAM above 2400 or 2666mhz, so the OP wouldn't get those performance benefits. Getting a Z370 board for a locked CPU isn't ideal though.

I think 8400 will be my choice i can't justify the extra £100 for the unlocked cpu.

would a 3200-3600 be the best still?

Yes, the cpu and boards we spoke about both support it. Price dependant of course. I would spent a considerable amount more for 3600 over 3200.

@R9mpo You could wait a bit until the cheaper Intel B360 chipset motherboards are out if you're decided on the i5 8400.
Currently the 8400 seems to be a better choice if gaming is your primary concern, but either between the R5 1600 and the i5 8400 should be a fairly substantial upgrade over that FX 6300. Here's a review including the 8400 and 1600: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i5_8400/

Well while a 8400 and board cost £190 and £110 I'd forget those as that 1700 and B350 money and 6 cores is the socket will offer.

The Ryzen 1600 and a board is around £200 and has plenty of upgrades.

The 8600K is a little fast than all of them for £400ish if you can find one.

He plays pubg and destiny2 at 1080p. Possibly the worse combination for ryzen.
The 8400 makes more sense here.

Wait, are you saying the Ryzen 1600 *and* a motherboard cost 200 combined? The basement price I can find is 238 quid. And that's a pretty awful motherboard, which I wouldn't recommend. 178 CPU 60 motherboard.

The Intel 8400 costs 178 quid as well, while the motherboard is 100, and I would absolutely recommend the MSI Z370-A Pro.

So, the difference is really 250 v 278. And let's not forget, if you want to OC that 1600, you will ditch the CPU cooler, so add on 25 quid for a hyper evo 212.

Anyway, I think it's much closer than your estimates suggest.
