coffee lake i5 8400/8600k or ryzen 1600?

Wait, are you saying the Ryzen 1600 *and* a motherboard cost 200 combined? The basement price I can find is 238 quid. And that's a pretty awful motherboard, which I wouldn't recommend. 178 CPU 60 motherboard.

The Intel 8400 costs 178 quid as well, while the motherboard is 100, and I would absolutely recommend the MSI Z370-A Pro.

So, the difference is really 250 v 278. And let's not forget, if you want to OC that 1600, you will ditch the CPU cooler, so add on 25 quid for a hyper evo 212.

Anyway, I think it's much closer than your estimates suggest.

The cooler is fine. Will check prices in a minute. Maybe the 1600 has gone up in price.

£270 with cheapest board that supports overclocking

£300

10% cost difference for 30% performance increase in the game he plays. (Given that the 8400 is on par with the 7700k in gaming benchmarks at 1080p)

8400 for 1080p gaming is a no brainer in this instance.

Only in games running the same spec system as the test.

Like anything when comparing results understand what is actually being compared. Overclocking, potential bottlenecks, memory speed etc. all need to be considered. If you game at 1440p a test at 720p is pretty much useless for example.

thinking about upgrading from my fx6300
Lots of options currently available to you then, how long have you had your FX6300, and do you envisage keeping this setup a similar amount of time?

I run a 780ti cpu currently.
Do you have any plans, or the budget to change the GPU at any point in the near future (3-6 months)?

Would like to play games such as pubg and destiny 2 at 1080p
Are you keeping the monitor and resolution for the foreseeable future?

Once you've answered those questions, you can start to narrow things down a bit, also do you have a fixed or flexible budget, and what is it currently?

Ive had the fx6300 about 3 years but only really played games like wow untill recently and have decided to sell my PS4 and get into PC gaming.

I've not got many plans to change it unless I heavily get involved in PC gaming through the winter. Not sure what the logical next step is.

I only said 1080p as I'm certain my monitor isn't 4k and I don't have the budget to change it just yet.

With budget in mind I'd like to get as much bang for my buck. I'd like to keep sub 400 or close to for cpu ram and Mobo. I also need a new case!

Bit of a topical subject. Some might under clock.

See this thread.

Where is the actual evidence that some are underclocked and won't reach specified core clock speeds? I.e. real-world examples from those with an i5-8400. I don't just mean that Intel is no longer publishing the details of their core turbo boost figures.

There isn't any. Just the usual spreading bs.
I've seen these 8400's run at 3.8ghz on all 6 cores. Without multi core enhancement.

You know this is an official statement right?
