oh I do like to be beside the seaside
I'm looking to buy a bottle of Cognac ready for Christmas, but have no idea what to go for.

Are the "standard" brands (Martell, Remy Martin, Hennessy etc) good ones to get?
Are the store branded ones (i.e. Tesco) any good?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Budget is £40 tops.

You should try Remy Martin Louis XIII its 150years old and cost £999 for a standard bottle.

Edit: Hmm £40 budget prooves problematic, i think even the taster section at Remy Martin brewery in Cognac costs a surplus £60 to try a v.small serving (about quarter of a shot glass)

It's not real cognac unless its Remy Martin mmmmm

Of course it is lol - there are loads of producers in Cognac. Well worth a visit if you get the chance :) You should be able to get a Napoleon grade (XO) for £40 - go for that if you see one.

I managed to get a bottle of Petite Champagne cru for £60 from a smaller producer. Absolutely delicious. :p

lol! I think you mis-interpreted my point i meant it like its the best and should be the only one you drink! :D

you didnt really help apart from telling him to get the older and more expensive one, he wont get a remy, martell, hennessy xo for £40 and i imagine asking him to start looking into lesser known brands is just going to cause him more confusion. £40 will get you a vsop of any of the brands you mention and all are more than drinkable. ;)
