Hi,

I've been studying a Higher National Diploma in Computing at college since February 2006. Because its a 2 year course, i dont finish until February 2008. To top things off, at the end of this semester (June 15th) the course is no longer being run at the college. However, i am still being given the 4th and final semester with the college, but because the course isn't being run i will not have any lessons, only the extra time and limited help from one lecturer via email who offered to help me.

All my friends on the course started in September 2005 so they are finishing the entire course in 3 weeks time. Because i started a semester late the modules i missed have been agreed with the course leaders to be run in my final semester. However, during the second year we are supposed to do a large Networking Project over the entire second year giving us 34 college weeks to do the main project and secondary project (as agreed in creating the timetable at the start of this year), alongside the other modules learning the skills and knowledge required to do the project as the year progresses.

But someone on the course decided not to give us the project at the start of this year back in September. They waited until 5 weeks ago before giving us the project, claiming that we now had all the knowledge to do the project and get it done. This means that we've been given less than a quarter of the normal time to run this project than we should have. We've also had to do 4 major assignments for other modules at the same time, so by the time we finished those assignments we've effectively only had about 4 weeks to churn out this entire project and secondary project.

I feel sorry for my friends because they've got to finish the entire project by June 15th. However, because i've got the second half of my final year in September, do i have any legal rights to demand that the deadline for the project be extended to February 2008, so i actually have the second year to do the project. Or am i stuck with having to negotiate with the lecturers to get the extention. Also, does anyone know if my friends have any rights to demand more time to do this project if they need it or are they being screwed over.

I am unable to work as fast as my course mates because i am unable to mentally focus for long periods of time, probably due to the fact that i have Epilepsy which means i cant work as fast as everyone else although i am as smart as them, it just takes me longer to learn.

Does anyone here know where myself and my friends stand in this situation legally or are we all just being screwed over with no recourse and are only limited to negotiating with the lecturers? (one of them is a complete retard who only has a job there because hes been a lecturer for 17 odd years but is as thick as two short planks of ****, i think its him that pushed the project back to the end of the year).

Thanks.

Sounds to me like what you have typed there should just get sent straight to the head of the college, outlining specifically why you feel what they are doing is inapproproate.

It sounds like they are overlooking the students somewhat. Unfortunately unless you complain through the correct channels nothing will be done about it.

Sorry but i dont have a clue regarding any 'legal' standings, but to be honest i'd say no, your at a college, the college sets the rules as far as i'm aware.

And this is by no means a personal dig or anything but I can't help but be a little confused as to the following...

'I am unable to work as fast as my course mates because i am unable to mentally focus for long periods of time, probably due to the fact that i have Epilepsy which means i cant work as fast as everyone else although i am as smart as them, it just takes me longer to learn.'

I'm very sorry to hear you have epilepsy, but I just wondered as to what your definition of 'smart' is?

What i was trying to say is that when we are all taught something by the lecturer in a lesson, everyone else (only 5 of us on the course) grasp it the first time and understand whats being taught or what to do like when we were taught how to network computers. But i have to have it explained a couple of more times before i understand it to the same level as my friends. I'm normally confused after the lecturer teaches us something the first time. Once i eventually understand it then i'm sort of level with my firends of knowing what to do and can do the work to a similar standard, but it just takes me longer to grasp the knowledge. If that answers your question.

As for TomWilko's post, i am planning on bringing it up with the head of the department when we return to college next week as its a holiday this week. I've already had some work extended into the next semester, i'm just hoping they can do the same for the project. Even if i do get the extentions i need i'm not going to let it rest, im gonna cause a huge stink about it afterwards about the way we've been treated.
