Morning all,

I'm off to Amsterdam in December with some friends and found out last night we are going to spend a night in Cologne, Germany for the beer festival.

I've been to Amsterdam before so know what to expect there ;) but not been to Cologne or Germany.

Anyone been to the beer festivals in Cologne before? What should I expect besides getting bladdered on nasty local german beer?

Thanks

The German beer is amazing, I'd make the most of it before paying £4.50 a pint in Amsterdam.

Cologne is a nice place, the cathedral when you come out of the train station is spectacular. It might be a bit grim in December for sitting out, but there's plenty of decent places to eat and drink down by the river.

Ah yes, the over inflated price of beer in Amsterdam. We will be paying that before going to Cologne.

The plan is, fly to Amsterdam on the Thursday, jump on the train to Cologne on Saturday and fly back from there Sunday.

Cologne is known for it's Christmas markets in December.
From a Guardian travel guide....
Cologne boasts six Christmas markets, running from 23 November. Sip glühwein, munch on wurst and lebkuchen (ginger biscuits) and browse the 160 stalls that fill the courtyard in front of the stunning cathedral, or take the kids to the Alter Markt, backed by picturesque gabled houses, which offers toy stalls and Santa Claus's grotto. Besides the market there is plenty to see and do: more than 30 galleries contribute to a vibrant art scene while beer-lovers will enjoy the breweries dedicated to serving "Kölsch" – a light beer that can only be made in the Cologne area.

GET IT RIGHT IT'S KöLN!

Back on topic the cathedral is amazing also the musem of art is worth a look Bars are all over the place and the beer is not bad for Larger(I'm an Ale drinker).

edit: I can't believe I also forgot this The Chocolate museum is definitly worth a look!

Cologne (Koln) is a beautiful place. Loads to see and do and the Christmas markets should have started by then. German beer is far superior to our beer. Cehaper too. I lived in Germany for four years while in the RAF and loved the place.

Cologne (Koln)

Koeln if you don't have a ö ;)

Never been there personally but as has been mentioned there will be a Christmas market at that time as with most German cities. The one problem I've found with those Northern German cities is the amount of squaddies you get in the bars unfortunately.

I've been to the these Xmas markets twice. They're very good for traditional xmas decorations. they get packed at weekends though & suffer from pickpockets. last time I went Cologne were playing Borussia Dortmund at home & the markets were packed with both sets of fans before the game!
