I don't really know enough about the Insignia, is there an unbiased review of how it fairs against its main rival, the Mondeo?

To be fair I don't see there being much between the 2 engines but there seem more 118's available!

Trust me, there is a difference. Test drive both.

I've had numerous 318d, 320d, 118d and 120d as loan cars and have racked up a few thousand miles in them - the x20d was ALWAYS the noticeably better choice.

I'm not sure about the diesels in the mondeo, the 2.0 petrol was carried over from the mk3 mondeo IIRC.

The reason I suggested the insignia was that I really don't think the mondeo is amazingly well made, my dad's has a few rattles, a few bits of trim have fallen off and the carpet has come away from the door lining.

As with the other thread my Volvo S80 D5 says it does 43.5 combined but I struggle to get 39 that 10% out pretty poor

This. I haven't driven a 120d, but the 118d was pretty ****.
