Coming from PC to PS3 - struggling with controller!

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on making the transition from mouse & kbd to controller as painless as possible, or is it just a case of practicing until I get it? :o

made the same change as you a couple of years ago.

Have an Xbox 360 and a PS3 now and never play games on the PC. So much so i bought a mac instead of a PC

Theres no secret.

Just practice :)

Iv'e always been a console gamer but I used to prefer fps games on the PC.

I barely ever game on the PC these days apart from the occasional game of Audiosurf

I think since Goldeneye for the N64 consoles have been getting better and better for handling the genre.

Still wouldn't touch a console RTS though.

It is all down to the controls and what your comfortable with.

So, in the past I've been a pretty hardcore PC gamer, but I don't have the cash just now to build up a decent PC. Been given a PS3 for my birthday, and loving the games that are out (and being able to just chill back on the sofa and play =P) but I'm really struggling to use the controller in FPS games, I can't aim for crap!

I've been playing MAG and Fallout New Vegas, loving the games, and Fallout isn't so bad due to the VATS system, but in MAG I consistently come in the bottom 3-4 players, generally only getting 1-2 kills per game, because I just can't aim fast enough with the stick (with mouse & keyboard on PC I usually come in the top 5, so it's not just because I suck =P)

I was in the same situation as you, I can tell you now you have a rough road ahead of you. It's really hard to go from being elite on PC to down right mediocre on a PS3, you will get better though with the time. By the way MAG is an incredibly hard game to drop people in, players can heal themselves and be healed by others constantly so you need to be very accurate with your shots. You've actually picked the perfect game to transition over, it will be really tough at first but then if you play games in the CoD or BF series you'll notice people drop much more easily.

Just stick with it, I promise with time you will get better. The time depends on the person, it took me a year before I got really good again but it may only take you a month. If you have any other questions my PSN ID is Drunzer just drop me a message.

Considering it costs all of ~£400 to make a PC that will produce far better visuals than 360 or PS3 you obviously got ripped off.

...inb4 '£400 is still more than a console' argument, as it's void due to the fact a PC does far more than a console can ever do.

Nope, didn't get ripped off, just built a high end pc. Yes, you can have a £400 pc, but I wouldn't want one thanks. If you're going to do pc gaming, it needs to be done properly. High end or nothing, hence why I gave up when I started a family, couldn't afford to drop £500 on a graphics card anymore.

well, that's certainly one opinion. i dont agree with it at all, mind.

Get a copy of CODBLOPs and play the training online mode, you can pick the maps and opponent difficulty to ease yourself in.
I just got some trigger extentions and covers for the sticks that dip in like the xbox controller as I don't seem to get on as well with domed PS3 ones and think that the xbox is a better controller for me.

Have you adjusted the sensitivity? that was the biggest problem I found, the sticks were just way to slow, on games like MW2 I had the setting up to 9, where as my console only friends had it on around 3-4, this was my moving from years of Keyboard and mouse too.

^^^ This helps, a lot! Forgot about that.

I bought mine for GT5, I won't be buying a single FPS game on it. Games like Resident Evil work on a pad, mainly because the fiddlyness adds to the tension instead of a 'oh dear, I'm dead'
