Hey,

Looking to buy a new camera soon, will be for those days where the SLR is too big, wanting it to have RAW, if possible, but no problems if not, also have a really clean sharp picture.

Been thinking about the G7 but not too sure.

No budget as of yet, but would prefer the best for the money i can.

No bridge cameras ;).

Any ideas?

You could go for the G6...I think Canon are bringing out another high-end compact soon called the SX100 IS, and there's the A650? I think both of those have RAW.

RAW isn't a big factor, as i can use my SLR for RAW.

Whats the shots like on a G7?

Any ideas on pricing for the G9? Not wanting to buy a compact thats worth more than most SLR's :p.

Exactly! From another thread on here, someone mentioned that the G9 would be around the £425 area... :\

Well I was going to show you some of what I've shot, but being a noob and all, I don't think any of my shots would really do the G7 justice. I'm sure I can eek so much more from it the more I learn. I'm sure you can find many great examples on Flickr.

It's very fast, and sharp. The AF can be hit or miss at the tele end of the zoom, and noise at higher ISOs is very acceptable (I think the Fujis are slightly better but that's it). I wish it had a wide angle though! I keep thinking that it could be sharper compared to all the photos on this forum, but I have to remind myself that most of them on here are taken on DSLRs :p

Been reading a few reviews, and the G7 stands out, along with some of the IXUS IS Range.

What would you get? Might be used for sport on the odd occasion that the SLR wasn't allowed in, also for parents to use occasionally.

G7 is top so far.

The new Canon S5IS can be had for £250.

They're releasing the SX100IS too, which I've read is similar-ish to the G9. And is there the A650 too?

How about a quick Poll so it helps me decide, im torn between :(.

Canon G7 - £282
Canon IXUS 950 IS - £184
Sony DSC-S800 - £154
Canon PowerShot A700/10 IS - £190
Or Bridge/Different Camera?

Ta

Preferably wanting it a small size (compared to SLR), with a good focal range :).

The Bridge Cameras are the Canon S3/S5 IS and a Olympus SP-550 UZ.

You want a long focal length range but you dont want a bridge camera????

Bridge is a possibility, as said.

Some of the ones listed get ~200mm.

Edit:

Its mainly for days where SLR is too big to take, lenses etc - and also a good backup to take.

I bought my missus a PowerShot S3 IS a year ago or so and it's a good bridge camera, fits in a pretty small lowepro bag. Wouldn't take it to the pub though, obviously.

Yeah, preferably wanting a compact, G7 looks like its favoured so far.

OT: Whats the D200 like mate?

Some nice shots there in your flickr.

Change of plan, been talking to my dad.

He said he'd pay for my upgrade of an SLR, and also a compact - but would rather pay more towards SLR than Compact/Bridge.

So he named upto £140/150 for Compact/Bridge for now.

F31 the best?
