company of heroes good Base building ?

I was gonna say, I remember virtually sod all base building in this, especially in SP, half the missions you're given a small squad and the challenge is progressing far enough to establish a base without losing any men. After that, there isn't really any base building, just establishing a basic HQ.

This game is all about the combat and the strategy of combat, the bases are there for no reason other than to stop it being impossible really :p

Exactly, yes you have to build a barracks. But you dont build base defences. Your base has some defences, the questio is, how lonhg will you live before your base defences get crushed?

The resources are spread away from your base, hence the idea is not to build a huge amount of base fortifications. Its to get resources to tech up whilst skirmishing as far away as you can to increase your resources compared to your opponent!

You do get emplacements/fortifications, the light and heavy vehicle facilities, barracks, support centre, supply yard and HQ as far as base buildings go. There's also the upgrade tree and command points for support options.

Only the brit can really build more base defences like 17lb or bofors. the US/Germans have to build buildings, but they have no defences they are just necessary to build more units. the idea is NOT to build up a huge base as this would be utterly pointless.

Personally I think Combat Mission did company-battalion level combat better. Tanks in CoH have health bars for crying out loud I know there's a need for balancing, but having Shermans take multiple hits from Tiger tanks is plain stupid.

Its not close combat, its not realistic, and the tanks have health bars. But it is the best action based semi realistic tactical strategy game out there. Even after 4 years.

I'm not suggesting they're usually viable, but the static MG bunkers and barbed wire\sandbags are there as options for the original two factions. Of course, you can also stick the heavy weapons teams (mortar\MG\AT guns) behind the sandbags as well. Which is necessary in a few of the defensive missions in the campaigns.

Yea but out side of a convoluted mission you'd never ever need or want to build an mg nest inside your base or build sandbags inside your bade in either skirmish or online play. The objective of competative play is never to linger around your own base, the game mechanism doesn't support this type of play.

there isnt much base building in it.

in victory point mode, you will probably build 5 buildings max in a 1v1 game.

in annihilation its more especially if youre having one of those stalemates.

unless im playing it totally wrong.

From what I remember (and I got stuck on the 5th level or something, lol) it is probably closer to DoW2 than DoW in terms of base building. You have to setup your forces to defend attacks and stuff but typically there will be other objectives driving you forward so you can't be static the whole game.

In vanilla there was maybe some merits to setting up a solid base defence with mines, razor wire, MG nests with squads and AT guns sat behind some sand bags. I had a mate who would build some really elaborate bases and they did hold of enemy rushes and allow counters. However the expansions made arty to readily available to all sides which meant that any base defences are destroyed to before a rush; so there is no real point any more.

Still the best RTS out there IMO. It is a real rock paper sissors game where you cannot just field one unit and expect to win. Forget about your base; build, get out there; fight, see what the enemy is doing, counter, hold the correct ground, tech and win. That is all there is to it ;)
