Mission 5 : Montegbourg (red ball express)

Is it me or am I the only one having problems with this mission. It is without a doubt the hardest mission I’ve played in any game.

Everything was going well with this game until I hit this mission. The first objective to rescue Dog Company is easy enough but from then on, it’s a nightmare. I’ve spent 5 hours on this mission and I‘m no further.

Tactically, once I’ve rescued Dog Company I have retreated back to HQ and set up a defensive position. Then the ten panzer tanks roll in. There not too much of a problem because I can use the infantry to throw sticky bombs at them as well as my Sherman’s having a blast at them to.

Soon or later though, I have to start moving out to capture fuel and ammo points as ammo runs dry but leaving camp leaves them at risk and I’ve lost camp a few times

I know I can’t afford to loose any of my 3 tanks, but they take such hit and the engineers don’t have time to repair them on field.

Is their way of increasing the riffle squads? I only seem to be able to produce engineers? How do I get more, each time these guys leave camp, I have to watch their numbers and pull them back quickly so can build their numbers up before loosing them.

I just don’t have the man power to push forward and to defend what I have and Axis armies are re-spawning from all over the place. The lack of resources is stopping me progressing yet there seems to be no way of moving forward or calling for support. Some extra riffle squads would help.

I’m giving one more session on this and I’ll cal it a day.

Any ideas?

How did you it?

Use your engineers to build barracks, weapons support, motor pool etc.

all you really need is a sniper, a mortar team and a rifle squad to take most of the lower strategic points.

So hold me base and build.. Maybe that's what i'm doing wrong becuase i'm trying to fight with the tanks and resources from the start.. They quickly disappear :(

Lol i dont remember how i did that mission now lol but i think i think it was pretty darn hard, whats are the objectives again and it might jog my memory lol

Primary Objective: (1) Rescue Dog Company
(2) Secure the Road
(3) Defend Redball Express

Secondary Objective: Destroy Axis Forward Base

Medal Objective: Destroy all of 109th Panzer units (10)

man i have almost given up on this mission. I have done everything i can think of, build a barracks but once its done i have till wait on myresources to build upagain b4 i can build and by the time that happens the tanks come rolling in or squads with flamefloers and wipe out my riflemen.

grrrrrrrrrr

yep that's extacly what's happening.. it's the Axus ground troops i'm having problems with the most.. and the lack of rifflemen.. how do i get more rifflemen squads?

Ah so is this the one where there is a fork in the road and you take over 1 to defend? if so take the top road, i tried the bottom one and mines screwed me lol, i didnt do the secondary objective but i did pwn the tanks lol, i got enineers to detonate the tank buildings and then troops to sticky bomb the panzers, my tanks that were supplied got spanked waaay 2 early on

Edit if this is the mission dont go to the point at the top right, unless you have it of cource, its heavily guarded with machine guns and i never took that bit either lol, also i just remembered my main forward base got blown up i just had a building in the center for making troops lol

hold your base and dont take the middle (when the convoy appears) until you have pretty much wiped out everything on the map first

i remember i had like 10 at guns defending my base at one point on this map (was playing on hard and it was a joke)

then i had a couple of rifle squads and a quad cannon go and take the resources... a couple of tanks in standby for when i came up against armour

once you have taken out their tank depot on the right of the map you can start to spam tanks.. and then just sit them at the 2 exits of the map, this is where all the axis reinforcements will come from... then take the middle and the map should end shortly after once the first vehicle gets home safely

You can do it without tanks, trust me :p get some infantry with at launchers and get their ranks up, then all u **** need is 1 engineering squad and get them to detonate the tank depots this is what i did, but its a long process because of the damn fuel regen

I was on this level for ages too.

The best thing to do is put up tank traps and barb wire. And slowly take over the map section by section.

I literally inched my way forward. Setup new defences and gradually took over the map. Machine gun groups and anti tank guns are a must on this level!

A quick tip:

Build up your base a bit, produce some rifle squads, defend yourself. Use engineers to repair your tanks whenever they lose any health - I finished this mission with my original complement of tanks still on full health, which meant never having to waste resources on building new ones.

Now, the clever bit... When you branch out over the map to capture the points don't capture the circular strategic points on the road. As soon as you do, the convoy shows up, and all the remaining germans round up and come to kill them. Instead, slowly and surely sweep the map, sector by sector, pushing the germans back and then capture the road. The concoy shows up unopposed, and then just pick one of the two forks and use the sherman minesweeper to clear the mines up one of the roads (I picked the left one, looked to be the easiest).

Hehe nice tip, might try it tonite on hard, i found the top road easiest, my ranked infantry killed the oppositon pretty easily but when i moved them down through the fields to the bottom road there was a lot more troops there and damn mines which killed my tanks in the first place :(

I used the population cap removal trainer. Can't exactly hold off your base, defend each capture point, plus have an offensive strike team with 20 off units can you?

Each point you capture gives you an addition to your pop cap, it's easily enough to complete the mission without downloading trainers :p

You don't have to defend every single capture point either - just secure a strong front line and you'll be fine :)
