Hey guys and gals :)

Im working on a 3D Studio Max 9 project, and it basically entails an animation that has to last a duration of 2-3 mins. The emphasis for the marking criteria is on the animation itself, not the model quality.

So im allowed to use pre-made models, so my question is...

Anyone know of any 3D model websites that i can download models from and are compatible with 3D Studio max or are 3D Studio max specific.

Thanks a lot in advance!

:)

You looked on Turbosquid? Personally I would make some simple models myself, as then you at least have control over how they are set up and rigged etc. It will also give you more experience in modelling. What course is it for?

Im on a course called BSc Entertainment Technology, the unit's called Animation and Virtual Reality Environments.

I see what you mean about the modelling, its just im a bit of a perfectionist with the visual design of things, and Im no good at modelling, just cant do it effectively enough, but i think i'll still give it a go if in doubt!

i'll have a look at Turbosquid also!

Thanks matey :)

Hi there mate, I have to do a similar assignment, although mine is titled, "The integration of 2D footage with 3D modelling" whereby we have to model everything ourselves and then use some form if particle systems or similar! Try 3dKingdom.org they are a decent site and also 3dBuzz.com have some useful tutorials etc on there. As messiah Kahn has mentioned try making the models yourself as it means you have more control over your objects and try and keep the polygon count low! I use 3dsmax but we use version 7 :( (damn university :/) Good luck with your work!

Thanks Kmistry!

Yeah i used to use Max 8 last year on the modelling unit, somehow scraped 65% for it

But it took me so long to do something that another guy knocked up in an hour :(

I can see what you all mean, least you know what your dealing with if its your own models, but if it was my models, they wouldnt look like what they were supposed to! haha.

Thanks a lot for the links, most helpful so far!
I recommend www.3dlinks.com tooif thats helpful to anyone!

If you want a general site and forum for 3D animation stuff, I tend to use www.3dtotal.com Theres a very friendly and helpfull bunch over on the forums.

With regards to studio max versions, I wouldn't worry too much about your uni has tbh. The underlying principles and functions don't change much at all from version to version. Having said that they reworked how texturing worked in version9 I think. Ive used max from version 2 upwards, and as a learner most of the functions you would need were already present then.

If you want to get better at modelling(Not saying you necessarily do) then as with most things, practive makes perfect. If you head over to the forums on 3Dtotal, they do a weekly speedmodelling competition where you have to model a chosen subject in an hour. Doing this certainly helped my modelling skills no end. :)

There is a very nice tutorial called Joan of Arc that i was doing recently... i finally managed to complete it but decided to call it a day before animating it. The rigging could probably do with a bit of a touch up but if you want it the model is all yours
