Computer usage monitor?

I have never thought of something like this but now I actually think I might need it. I'm trying to find out which departments in our school are making the best use of their laptops. They fight over them like dogs then I suspect they're left in cupboards a majority of the time.

Is there any application or utility that could give me some indication of how often they're used, how long for etc?

im sure you can get apps that monitor up time and then write to a log. i'll have to have a look about to see if i can see one that does the log bit thou

If they are connecting through Wi-Fi there might be some sort of log on the AP's to show which machine is loggin onto the network
