ok, to cut a long story short...

setup....

Asus A8N SLI Premium
Athlon 64 3000 venice
Geforce 7600GT
2 x 160gig maxtor SATA HDD's
1 x 80gig IDE Maxtor HDD
1.5gig DDR400 (1gig geil, 512mb kingston 2x matched pairs)

Yesterday my pc froze whilst i was at work, got home and could not get it started again, hal.Dll was missing?

Today, reinstalled windows XP, had problems on one drive which i'm putting down to a dodgy Sata drive with partition magic struggling with it. got it installed on the other SATA drive but when i install the Ethernet / sata drivers etc, they say they have installed and to reboot, so i do and i try to go on net and i can't. hmmmm, install windows on my 80gig IDE drive, i'm on net here, ok just to be sure, format both sata drives and reinstall windows, same thing, drivers install but no net and device manager has the yellow exclamation marks as before. so now i'm back on my 80gig drive and typing this to see if anyone might be able to tell me what might be the problem?

thanks.

have you set your sata ports as ide? you need to do that unless your raiding them... also make sure you do not instal sata drivers you wont need them unless its raid

i've been using this setup for probs about a year with no problems and have done nothing different this time to what i did when i built the pc.

didnt realise you wer ein boro.. im in guisborough..

just check in bios.. sometimes it can reset itself.. stranger things have happend plus u dint need to instal the sata drivers for ide function

bios looks fine. It has to be something to do with Sata, wether it's the drives or the motherboard i don't know, but windows has installed fine on my 80gb IDE drive.

dunno what relevence this may have but using hirens boot cd - partition magic 8.1, one of my sata drives has an error #110, which i don't know what it is because symantec took over powerquest and the table of error messages has gone.

ok, it's definitely not the hard drives as i've just bought a brand new one and it did the same so it's something to do with the sata connections.

When i boot my pc, the IRQ screen comes up and along side SMbus, usb1.1 and usb 2.0 and a another instead of a number it has n/a. But this IDE drive is working fine.

any ideas?

finally fixed it :D

I had a genius thought, reset the cmos, et voila, it was fixed, but i would have liked to know what caused the problem in the first place.
