So i've come to the conclusion I cant afford a DSLR as prices have gone up :( So just looking a getting an entry level compact untill I have enough dosh!!

I've narrowed it down to

Canon Powershot A480 S = £98 incVAT

or

Canon Ixus 85 = £143 incVAT

I want to know is the £55 diff in price worth it for the Ixus 85 as they seem very similar spec

I'm open to other surgestions as well guys

Will be buying Thursday ready for my Bank Holiday trip away!

Cheers

Kinda got my heart set on a Cannon 400D so hoping the prices will come down once the 500D is out for now just after a small point and click to take climbing with me etc

So, getting a 2nd hand DSLR is a good cost cutting measure. But to be honest,I wouldn't recommend a DSLR to anyone who is struggling to purchase the body in the first place. The Camera body will be a small fraction of the total system cost, and you will end up replacing it every few years if you are any kind of techno-geek.

Its not just quality lenses, its decent filters, tripods, remote releases, flashes, software, more software, color calibration, backup utilities, ore powerful PC, insurance, teleconverters, macro gear, external lighting, books, courses, more tripods, a lot of time spent on technique.

A good compact or bridge can do a lot and will certainly save a lot.

Why not get something like a Powershot A590 IS for around the £100 mark- at least gives you SOME manual and therefore creative control and also gets you get used to using manual settings ahead of taking the plunge into DSLR world...

Hi Guys,

Thanx for the input :)

Think I've decided on just a compact now and start looking at a SLR nearer end of the year. I really need to get one tomorrow so looking at second hand ones is out of the question.

Looking at either the

Canon Ixus 85 or Canon Ixus 100IS

What I want to know is, at the same resolution am I going to notice an improvement on the 100IS over the 85?

Is it really worth the extra for 12mp and HDvideo

Cheers

well I would like a Cannon and all the reviews i've read for them have been pretty good but like I said i'm open to suggestions ;)

Have a look in this week's Amateur Photographer. There is an advert for refurbed Nikon DSLR's (can't recall the models right now), for under 200 quid including kit lens :)

The D40 for £249 is very tempting

I'm still swaying towards the compact right now as I think it will make a good beach holiday camera esp with the waterproof housing

If you can find one get a Fujifilm 9600.

They be retailing on Gaybay for £100 - £150. Superb camera with a fantastic lens and some really advanced features even for a bridge camera.

I got one before I jumped into the DSLR market and I didn't regret it for one minute.

As said before, if you struggling with the affordability of even a body then its probably not the best time to be buying a DSLR.

Use Visa ;) Get a Nikon D40 supposed to be a nice little DSLR

+1 for D40

I've just recently bought my first SLR, and it was a D40, cracking camera :D

OP, have you tought about a Fujifilm S5800?

Its a bridge between a compact and a dSLR?

Around £130 last time i checked

i cant actually believe no one has pointed it out yet but a dslr isnt the be all and end all (which is the idea i get from some of the replies), there still has been some amazing shots on all kinds of camera's, yea it can help having better image quality and stuff, but if you have a shot that has that impact, it dont matter what its shot on :)

disclaimer: this may of been kinda obvious i know heh and im sure the op already knew and is just looking for the best for his/her budget, but thought i would point it out heh :)
