Yes, but John Howard uses actions to back up his words.. I can't see Blair doing that..
Thats true, but its a step in the right direction.

Oh please for the love of god STFU...seriously that pic is old and the whole 'thats racist' saying is getting a bit grating now...
Agreed.

Without describing the context of what he means by "Conform", I would suggest that speech is pretty meaningless.
To me it means when in Britain do as they do. i.e respect our culture, laws and traditions.

does that mean doctors you can hardly understand will get kicked out of the country?

The prime minister said: "So conform to it; or don't come here.

Been saying that FOR SWEAR SWEAR YEARS!!!!!!!!!! , But we keep being told stop being racist , yet NOW its ok? , HYPOCRITS!

Anyway ill say what i want and when i want being branded a racist or not
No.

How is a doctor speaking in an indian accent for example any different to one speaking in a scottish accent which can both be difficult to understand?

How is speaking in a different accent non conformist?

He says conform to our society and traditions, not our accent.

I find the comments on the "Have Your Say" area of the BBC site quite striking. There are people out there who feel very strongly about this subject, and I agree with some of the things being said. The burden should be upon immigrants to this country to accept and conform to our way of life, not for us to adapt ours around theirs so that we don't offend them.
This is exactly my view. And i think Blairs speech means a lot after all the political correctness that people blame this government for.

I agree with that , should be the same , this way This is england NOT bagdad or india!
Thats exactly what the PM is saying, and i agree.

I'm very very dispointed at the out come of this thread, everybody on here commended Australian PM John Howard for making that profound speech, now when Tony Blair trys to do a simular act nobody seems to give a hoot and we all just end up augueing over that stupid "Thats Racist" Anitmated gif which frankly I'm getting tired of as well. That's typical english though, we moan and moan and moan about something and when we get a step in the right direction nobody cares, instead we go off and try and find something else to moan about, becuase we are a nation of moaners.
I agree.

When John Howard said it half the forum turned up to congratulate him, wish our PM would say the same and **** off our government for not saying it.
Now our PM says the same thing and we get a thread full of spam and no-one seems to care.

Well, call me cynical, but it would be better received if Blair had followed through on one promise he's been forced to make due to public opinion.
Thats true, but i don't think John Howard had done much at the time of that thread.

I'm no fan of the labour government but you can't congratulate one government for doing it right and then ignore it when your government does the same.

I am of course joking around. I agree totally with the jist of Blairs statement. In practice though it's a bit crap, because he's spent the last 8-9 years blarting about political correctness. A change from Blair doesn't make much difference. What we need is a swift change, Out with Blair + Labour. The only reason I say this is (in relation to this topic!) because it's far too late in the day for Labour to be changing stance on conformity to British tradition etc. Best we just start afresh now.
Its all very well saying that, but do you really think the conservatives would be any better?

Labour is the best we've got imo, much as i hate them.

That kid is clearly saying "That's Racy". Why he keeps popping up in these discussions and being misquoted is beyond me...

I don't think that the Conservatives would do a much better job no. Personally I vote Lib Dem.
I would too but the probability of them getting into power is very small, some of their policies are unworkable and since Kennedy stepped down as leader i find them incredibly boring and frankly unelectable.

Which is a shame because we do need a 'real alternative'.

In all fairness though, the MCB and MA aren't really representative of Muslims, they are more representative of Islamists (Muslims who wish to pursue Islamic politics) and personally I think they are hating vipers who the government have given power to by attempting to 'engage' them being unable to see the difference between general Muslims and their ilk.
I have to agree. The MA and the MCB give a bad name to Muslims as a whole with their constant whining and headline generating, opposing all things that aren't Islamic and proclaiming that they are angry and its unjust. But the media and the government pander to them.

Although any organisation including the MA which condemns this speech is immediately labelling itself as anti British and refusing to integrate or even care about the British way of life. Alarming ehh. Should be more like a wakeup call.

I wonder if the government will still pay such close attention to them now?

I'd rather have the muslim association of Britain any day of the week rather than the bnp.
