I'm not a Chelsea fan, nor am i a fan of any particular football team but i follow the latest news every so often.

Anyways, i saw the highlights of that dramatic game where Cech and Cudicini both got injured. And with Cudicini almost ready for first team action again, i think, it left Hilario as the first team goalkeeper and in my eyes, he did good. Especially as he is the 3rd choice keeper.

So i was very surprised to see Chelsea had signed ANOTHER goalkeeper, admittedly it's only temporary but still, surely that's an insult to the current goalkeepers? Surely that's the point of a 2nd and 3rd choice? To be there when the 1st choice isn't avaiable? And the fact Hedman retired in 2005, things haven't become that desperate surely?

I don't understand it all...correct me, what am i missing?

/shrugs.

hedman is there incase cudicini and hilario get injured. or incase one gets injured and they need a substitute

I don't see what's confusing about the situation tbh.

Chelsea had 3 first team goalkeepers before the two injuries, all they have done is made sure they have 3 first team goalkeepers until Cech returns.

The chances of 2 goalkeepers getting injured in the same game are surely very small?

What i mean is, surely Cudicini and Hilario feel slightly insulted (Wrong word perhaps) that another goalkeeper has been brought in.

Interesting to see if Hedman acts as the 1st choice.

It's just precautionary really, better safe than sorry. I imagine all goalkeepers are aware of the pecking order there, and that Hedman won't be starting games unless absolutely neccesary.

Similar thing happened last season with Arsenal. Lehmann got injured, and I don't think we had a real 3rd choice goalie beyond a youngster (as we'd sold Stack the summer before). So we got Mart Poom in, essentially as a stop-gap until Lehmann was ok, even though he never played for us. Still with us now though.

I really hope that comment was made with tongue firmly in cheek. ;)

Why would they be insulted or feel unhappy in any way about Chelsea bringing in a 3rd choice keeper, when they are already well accustomed to having 3 first team keepers at Chelsea?

I don't get it. Explain? :o

On one side, sure they know the professional 'pecking order' but, hmm, okay say i'm Cudicini, ready to go and instead i find out another goalkeeper is brought in. I'd feel as though i wasn't good enough perhaps, as if the current reserve keepers are not up to scratch and instead a veteran goalkeeper is brought out of retirement to play instead. Admittedly we'll have to wait and see how many games he does play.

Well, you are aware of why Chelsea even need to sign a temp keeper in the first place aren't you?

Cech almost died, kinda. Wait, didn't you read my opening post...i said there that i saw the highlights of the game.

o.O

Indeed, and in the same game Cudicini got injured.

The signing of a 3rd choice keeper isn't really to give any real competition to the other two. It's more so that Chelsea have enough strength in depth to cover any injuries to the other 2 keepers.

It wouldn't surprise me however if Hedmen did get the odd game for Chelsea.

EDIT: that was a sneaky edit there lol.

I did read the first post, obviously not closely enough. That being said, if you know the full facts about Chelsea's injury situation, it only makes it more strange that you don't understand why they would sign a short term 3rd choice keeper.

They need him because Cudicini isn't happy, supposedly had a bust-up with Mourinho at being made to play second fiddle to Hilario when he was expecting to get his chance with Cech being out.

also the reason he has taken Hedman on rather than another current top keeper, is because its outside of the transfer window. cant buy a player from another club until the next window opens.

so its clear that he will only be there until cech is back in january :}

play him for 5 games and he'll be happy

despite the irony, that's not the point. what if cudicini gets injured, for example, then you've got ONE goalkeeper... and nobody on the subs bench

Good luck with Hedman. There are only two things I think about when I hear his name - his missus Magdalena and his appalling gaff against Bayern Munich when he played for Celtic. Immense pleasure followed by immense pain, it might appeal to some but not me. ;) .

do they not have a youth keeper in their ranks somewhere? a young ben foster/kirkland or someone else to step up, like david marshall for celtic did with it being only a temporary measure?

As has been mentioned, if Hedman was brought in ahead of CC then he would have a right to get the hump, he hasn't though, he's brought in as 3rd choice. And every team needs 3 'keepers at least:)

We've got a young lad called Yves Ma Kalambay in the reserves. He is a fair prospect but in the type of games we are involved in regularly you need experience if you play, he hasn't got that yet:)

I don't understand, who were the 3 first team goalkeepers before:
Cech, Cudicini and ?x?

And now after Cech's injury, they've got Cudicini, signed Hilario and signed Hedman. So I'd make that five goalkeepers in all by your counting (Cech, Cudicini, ?x?, Hilario, Hedman)

On the other hand, am I saying they only had two first team keepers before Cech got injured?

Cheers
