My 12 year old son is trying to build a gaming PC using new and old components. One of the old components is a Super Flower Leadex SF-850F14MP power supply which had a 2 * 4pin CPU cable connected to an old motherboard. However, my son has replaced the motherboard with a ROG B550-F into which the 2*4 pin CPU cable doesn’t fit and we can’t find another cable that would link the power supply to the motherboard.

Hopefully the attached links help to show the issue with the different pin configurations, which I can only best describe in words as:

The cable we have has 2x 4pins in the following sequence as seen from the motherboard, ie they would face onto the motherboard as
  • square / rounded
  • rounded / square
and
  • rounded / rounded
  • rounded / rounded
However, on the motherboard the pins read

1. for the 4 pin
  • square / rounded
  • rounded / square
2. for the 8 pin
  • rounded / square / square / rounded
  • square / rounded / rounded / square
Obviously the 4 pin on the motherboard matches one of the cable plugs but this isn't the case for the 8 pin in the motherboard whatever way round the 2x4 pin cables are configured. I’m reluctant to just force the 2*4 pin cable onto the pins on the motherboard (although they had been forcefully connected to the old motherboard and that was working ok).

Can anyone help please?

Huh - the cable at the bottom looks like a 4 pin cpu cable, but the top one doesn't (the square and rounded pins should match on a diagonal). Are they on the same physical cable?

Hi Jason,

If I am unsderstanding your question correctly, looking at the image in post #4 the two clips should be in the middle, not on the outside.

The 2 x 4 pin connectors should be identical in pin layout but the top connecter in post 4 has 4 rounded connectors but should be identical to the bottom connector , 2 square and 2 rounded.

This is the confusion for the op.

Indeed they do.

A lot of these 4+4 connectors don't have the corresponding square/round. Mine doesn't.

As seabiscuit says, put the connectors side by side so the clips are in the middle and touching, and they'll fit the motherboard fine.
