Conroe motherboard question

Hey...

Quick question,

Ok, so conroe is socket 775 like the latest P4's and so on... does that mean that eventually around the time of release/a bit later most mother boards that are 775 will work with Conroe, or is that completely impossible?

It depends on the chipset, iirc P965 & I975X support conroe.

I am considering conroe, but to be really honest, paying 150 or so for a motherboard is putting me off quite a bit... especially since the selection is kind of limited and the technology is not exactly proven :/

Yeah I'm not keen on paying that for a board either, although they will probably come down in price.

Well ive looked at 975x boards and the prices are just taking the biscuit :eek:

also just been reading over at anandtech and found this interesting paragraph

The Intel side of things is not quite so clear, in part because we're still waiting for the launch of the Core 2 Duo processors and platform. From what we saw at Computex 2006, many motherboard makers should be able to run Core 2 Duo processors on current Intel chipsets -- we saw everything from 865/875 through 915, 945, and of course the official 965/975 running the upcoming processors. It appears that the only requirements are proper voltage regulation modules (VRMs) and a BIOS that works with Core 2 Duo. Unfortunately, as we have seen in the past, Intel sanctioned support (at least on Intel chipsets) of Core 2 Duo may be limited to the 965 and 975 chipset families. We will have to wait another month or so for the official launch to find out how things pan out in terms of motherboard/chipset support.

i truley hope there is some substance in what they say about older chipsets running conroe either that or intel are trying to pull a fast one on us :confused:

The CPU's are going to be very cheap, they are probablly going to try to make a lot of money with people slashing out on new motherboards and everything else to...

A real shame to be honest :/

I reckon they'll make a packet on both cpu's and chipsets tbh.
