Considering Canon 50mm f1.4......

Jaybee, i upgraded from a 450d to a 5dmk2. Im a bit of a sucker for 50mm as its the closest focal length to what the human eye sees apparently. As such it gives a very natural view of the world photographically. On my crop sensor it was too telephoto, just didnt feel right, but i got some great shots with it.

Im thinking i should just put the 1.8 on for a week or 2 and get used to it again rather than chucking money away on new glass...

The 85mm on FF will be like your 50mm was on the 450d. The 35 on FF will be roughly like 50 on 450d. Yeah you are right about the human eyes field of view being most closely represented as 35mm ish.

yeah the 85mm does interest me but like i say, for a walkaround its a bit to tele for me on FF. I remember using the 50mm on my crop and always having to back up loads, not a problem for most people you would think, but.... I was in a museum in Athens and kept backing up and walked into a priceless sculpture and it wobbled and lots of people screamed. Another time i was backing up and almost fell into a barbeque.

Potentially this is a problem unique to me, but like i say i reckon 50mm is perfect for a walkabout on FF

Anyway i seem to have digressed somewhat, i appreciate the input, especially from peeps who have done the 1.8-1.4 upgrade. Reckon the money would be better put away towards the 1.2 or maybe even the sigma 50.

Thank Guys

@raymond...

Yeah i kind of agree, a bit wider is always more usefull, i generally do landscape stuff or street stuff but there aint much choice in the canon 35mm department is there? The 35mm 1.4 looks awesome but its a big chunk......

I took that to Rome...on a 5Dii :D and it was the only lens I used the entire trip. I didn't bother with the hood to save room, had a B&W filter on to protect the glass.

Rome in 35mm

Rome is first stop on this years travels! Off there in April. Cant wait. Financially im thinking the 1.8 will have to do, maybe we can have a 35mm/50mm Rome comparison....

Awesome shots there Ray, really looking forward to it..

I do have a free lens hire in the bag from lensesforhire after a prob last year so i might see if they will send me the 35mm for a week....

Whatever you get order it in plenty of time...I ordered a 7D + 15 - 85 IS a week before my travels. Camera arrived, lens didn't = very unhappy me. Took my old 28 - 135 and 50mm 1.8, totally forgot I had the 50mm most of the time! Was more of a whistlestop travel down US cities tho, so no great loss. More a reccie for a proper cross-US drive one year...

This thread makes me want the 35mm 1.4 so I'm going to leave now.

i have the Canon 1.4, its decent, its not amazing. I dunno if the 1.2 is worth it, apart from that bokeh......

The 85/1.8 is a bargain..

I've promised myself not one lens in 2011, but when I can free up the money for another in 12 months it will be the 85mm.

I had the 1.4 and hated it, slow, almost as poorly built as the 1.8. Isn't an updated version coming anyway?

I'd hold off to see how that looks.
