Considering Canon 50mm f1.4......

I was well impressed with the 50mm f1.8, the build quality didn't bother me at all. It's not as if I paid hundreds for it. I wouldn't want to drop it that's for sure, although I can say that about any lens! It's AF on the 1D3 was much improved as well, although I always felt self concious using a £70 lens on a 1D body!

I looked at the Canon f1.4 but also the Sigma f1.4, I picked up the latter second hand for £220 and it's a nice lens. The IQ especially in OOF areas is much smoother than the f1.8, sharpness wise the f1.8 was pretty stellar so that's hard to beat anyway. However since I bought the 30mm f1.4 I've hardly touched the 50mm, I'm tempted to sell it but would regret it. As said on full frame I would be looking at the 35mm, either the f2 if budget limited or saving up for the 35L. Of course it all depends on whether the focal length works for you personally :)
